What kites to bring to Barbados over Chrism./NewY.

Postby hced » Thu Oct 11, 2012 1:53 pm

On my way to Barbados over the Christmas holidays.
Only want to bring 2 kites, any recommendations what to bring. 12m I believe is first choice, second choice is between 8m or 17m. Usually the 17m wouldn't be on the list, but since mr El Nino seems to have an effect this year it might be an option.
Usually get going on my surfboard from 13-14 knots on my 12m.

Any comments, all welcome?

Thanks

Hi,
I spent 4 weeks in Barbados mid December to mid January last christmas/new years.

I used my Kahoona V3 7.5m on a 5"8 Underground Freewave board most of the time but I had a few 9m days, a few 11m days and 1 or 2 13m days.

If I were you I'd bring the 8 and 12. 17 is crazy big.

I have been there twice during that time period.
I bring 9 + 13 m and never miss a windy day.
72 kg ride surfboard.
Best winds are typically very early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
Most people miss the great a.m. sessions.

Living there, I found I used a 12 90% of the time (90kg, with a twintip). The rest of the time I was mostly on a 17, with very rare sessions on a 10.

If you're taking a surfboard, your 8 and 12 will probably do, unless you're a bit of a fatty.

Faber - it's quite expensive, but very safe and very family friendly. Unless things have changed significantly in the last couple of years, the most popular kite beach (Silver Rock/Silver Sands) can be stressful with small kids - it isn't a very big launch area, it gets crowded, and it gets a bit nuts when there are lessons going on. Not a problem provided that someone can keep a grip on the small people. Long beach (a little to the Northeast) has stacks of space, but has no facilities and (sometimes) a pretty brutal shore break. The West coast (where most of the popular tourist beaches are) is more or less unkiteable for most of the year.
