was really quite good fun! :)
Just curious why this size in these conditions ?

15-18 knots is more like a 9 to 10m2 LEI (and even smaller foil) when waves (waveboard) and average weight, typically :naughty:

But if a warmer area, it changes one size up though 8)

As said - just curious...

I only have a 21m and a 9m fuel at the moment.

Not enough for the fuel, a bit too much for the 21m.

I would have much rather been on a 12S3 or 15s3

It wasn't bravado it was all I had!

Still was a good day :)

Thanks - that explains :thumb:

And yes, a 9m2 Fuel is like a 7 or 8m2 SLE (and even smaller foil), so can understand you had to take the big one 8)

The chop and swell slows you down so you cant get speed to boost. the slow turning and completely non existant down wind ability is a real pain in the waves. also when you do ride a wave upwind the extra speed powers the kite up and tears you off the wave face.... grrrrr.
I've come to the conclusion that it really is a flat water or land kite.

plummet wrote: Yes i also loop downwind. which is fine unless your on a wave and the wave is pushing you faster than the loop..... then its tack upwind or have an expensive pile of fabric get washing machined in the surf.
Kamikuza wrote: Have you done a mixer test and checked your SPL length?
SPL = spare parts line = the bright yellow lines that go through the pulleys... they can shrink A LOT and bork up the handling..
SUMMARY
Ram airs suck at racing.
Ram airs collapse and twist on downwind legs.
Ram airs suck in chop and waves - THEY ARE A FLAT WATER OR LAND KITE (if that).
Ram airs cause the rider to fall into the water on the downwind legs. Often you end up with an "expensive pile of fabric getting washing machined in the surf!!!
Make sure you spend hours and hours checking the mixer and your SPL and your line lengths (cos they shrink and bork up). A degree in basket weaving will help. After all those hours, your kite will still suck.

There's an interesting discussion here about foils and waves generally: http://www.foilzone.com/phpbb3/viewtopi ... =1&t=16140

The Mutant TT may be a big part of the problem. The Speed 3 is best with a fast board. A slow board will handicap you. You should be able to jump well in chop and waves with a Speed 3 unless you are underpowered.

I have had plenty of great days riding the Speed 3 in light wind and decent size swell. I use both the waves both as ramps for jumping as well as the speed of a breaking wave for wake style tricks. You may have to adapt your riding style a bit. You will not be able to ride quite the same as riding with a wave-specific kite, but you can have a blast in the waves with a Speed 3!
