Storing wet kites - colors?

Postby Toby » Thu Oct 25, 2012 11:56 am

are there certain colors that tend to color the kite when wet? Or can all color if it is cheaper color?

Difference between salt and sweet water?

Black color cloth always tend to spoil white one. Salt or sweet water does not matter.

If the manufacturer is using coated ripstop then the problem should be less severe since the color is under the coating.

I know Cabrinha North and Best advertise using coated fibers recently but they do not specify what the coating is so it could be wax, nylon, poly urethane, etc.

Any coating will help by repelling the water and by creating a barrier between the coated fibers and moisture but some coatings will last longer then others.

North calls it technoforce D2

As far as some colors being worse then others. I don't think it really matters but White is always the worst in terms of showing a stain. I suppose maybe white is the natural fiber color? Maybe since it has no color added its more prone to absorbing colors? just a guess.

Never ever store kites when they are wet. This will shorten the life of your kite considerably.
Dry your kites before packing.
If not possible to hang them to dry at home in your garage, then drive home with the struts inflated which will help to dry during the ride. If not dry and no place to hang then store away with struts inflated until dry.
If cold day (<6 degrees Celsius) and warm in car (>22 degrees Celsius) then leave a bit of pressure from the struts in order to avoid explosion.

Make sure you remove all of the sand too as the sand will scratch the cloth due to the folding and pressure during packing.

I've heard you can stand a kite up in the corner of your house with the struts inflated to have gravity help draw the water down out of it while its drying too
