Beamrider wrote:Hi all,
I devoured this thread, very very informative, and I need your kind and expert advice.
My weight is 58kg (128 lbs) - yes, I'm a light rider - and I only mow the lawn, haven't started jumping yet.
I have recently moved to Dubai and, since light wind rules here, am planning to buy a Sector V3 to use together with either a Lithium 2013 14m or a Kahoona V1 11.5m.
The conditions are usually 8-11 knots, with rare peaks at 14-15.
Would a Sector V3 54 be better for me than a 60? As you can read above, low end is very very important here and I wouldn't like to miss sessions because I bought a smaller board... but at the same time, I don't want to fly away with the wind
Thanks in advance for your help!!!
Hi Beamrider,
Based on your weight and the Lithium 14m i think you would be more comfortable with the Sector V3 54. You are really light so I personally don't think the 60 is necessary for you.
**What I would suggest to maximize the 54 in those lightwinds would to get the quad fin set to plan quicker and hike upwind further. Then in those "windier" days you mentioned take the carving fin sets and have a blast around!**
Check with the shops in Dubai - there might be a demo or two or some friendly rider who will let you give them a go before you make your decision!
Cheers,
Schmidy

Hi both, thanks for your advice!
I will definitely test the boards first, there is a 60 that I can try in a couple of weeks, and let you know!

I lived in Dubai, so I understand your situation. I would go for the sector 60. Kiting in Dubai is all about time on the water and you'll get for time with the sector 60. Also no waves in Dubai so the handing difference of the 54 would be neglible. I would recommend a fly surfer speed 3 21m. I didn't want to pay for it, so I bought a north rebel 16m and I sat on the beach A LOT, watching the dude on the speed out kiting on the water. If I ever move back to Dubai, I won't make that mistake again!

Don´t you realy think, with his weight and a Sector board, a SP3 21 is preferable over the SP3 15 or even the SP3 12?

Basically, the best wind months are in summer, Jul, Aug, Sept, and with outside air temperatures of 40+ degrees, air density is very low. There are so many days that the wind is so light that just another knot or two will mean the difference between sitting on the beach all afternoon and riding. my comment is from what I saw work. When all of us who owned 15-17m kites were sitting on the beach the only people out on the water were the SP3 21's. My advice is to give the guy the most number of days on the water.

I just came home from a trip to El-Gouna two weeks ago and we unfortunatelly had almost no wind the whole week
During the day we had about 9-10 knots breeze, no whitecaps, and there was just one guy out there that could ride. He was a big guy I would recon about 90-100 kg. He was riding a SP3 21 DL and had a big Spleene door board. He was just cruising about because of the low winds. BUT! then a guy at the adjecent kitesurfcenter was out on a Crazy Fly Sculp, and a race board. There was no hint on the size but from laying on the beach later on I would rate the kite as a 13-15 m kite. He was using a North LTD race board and the rider was about 70 kg (or there about). He had more then enough power and was just flying around like crazy, gybing, going upvind at just mad angles!, astonishing realy!!
So there you have my take on why a big foil is not necesseraly the right call for a lightweight rider and a race board.

Hi guys, thanks so much for the replies, definitely a lot of food for thought here.
There definitely are quite a lot of Flysurfer foils here (mostly Speed 3 19 and 21m, with a couple of Speed 2) and many light wind kites as North Dyno, Naish Fly, Ozone Edge 17m and Cabrinha Xoom 18m. Really, big kites is the norm here, and even them are often sitting on the beach.
I have definitely thought about a Speed foil, but everybody here at Nessnass Beach suggests that it would be overkill for my weight, and probably I should go for a powerful 14m (Bandit, Lithium and the like, i.e. something more of a Open Delta/C shape with low profile) and a good directional freeride board - hence the Sector option, since reading your comments it seems to me a great board and quite forgiving (it would be my first directional).
Yesterday I tried a Sector V2 60 One Design with an Airush VXR 18m in basically 6-7 knots, and was running upwind like crazy - to the point of scary. Choppy water didn't help either (yes, in Dubai it's choppy even if there's no wind... go figure!) I still have to learn to jibe, and found that turning the board in the water while trying to keep the VXR in the air is quite cumbersome. I still will try the new V3 60 before buying, but I would like to abuse once again of your kindness to ask you experts:
- is the V3 60 more powerful (=more upwind and speed) than the V2 60 One Design?
- how would you compare the turning/manouverability of the abovementioned boards?
- I have to learn to jibe: is the V3 60 board difficult to learn on?
Thanks again in advance!!!

Try the 54 then easy peasy to jibe and carve. Might be enough to with a bigger kite. Go very well with a 17m VXR or an edge.

Hello again, Now that you have tested it with an 18 m kite you should give the Sector One design a testrun with a smaller kite, 14-15 m. It would be interestning to hear your thoughts in the difference (if any) in light winds.

Hi Beamrider
I am 58kg
Just like you. I kite in very light wind place Singapore. Usually 6 to 12 kts and at times 10 to 15kts. I use the V3 54 and 12M Lithium as my lightwind kite. Fir very light wind like 6 to 7 kts condition where even windsurfers on formula and 11M sails are not planning I get fully planning up wind with this combination. Just one trick I use extended lines of 33M. Adding 10M lines to the standard Airush 23M lines. I am the envy of the beach all the time. Caution with 33M lines and 12M Lithium I get overpowered at 15kts..I would suggest V3 54 as it is a much more versatile board and I can use it up to 20kts on 9M Airush waves and small waves.. V3 60 is more of a race board..

i dont think the flysurfer speed 21m will mate well with the sector. I have a zephyr and the difference in low end with my 11m edge is negligible with my sector v1 52.
i think a the 14m lithium and the 54 is all you need. sure you can get going maybe 1knt sooner on the 60 but i have a blast on the 52 sector at 20knts. suuuuuper fast off the wind.....
these boards are great for lightwind but i find them to be amazing in higher wind and flat water.
