Mako King Vs Airush Sector 60v3 Vs Airush One design?

Postby Telekiter » Tue Nov 13, 2012 8:26 pm

Which one is the best in small waves (up to head high) and nasty chop?
The Mako king is naturally to be used in mutant mode.

So another Sector thread.....I don´t care :P

I have used the fat mako in mutant and tt mode.
For small waves and gusty conditions the tt strap setting is much better.
It evens your weight over the hull and gives you excellent range in the lulls.
I put a single wave fin on my dominant side (goofy) and the tt fin on the other and the board has drive and excellent speed in the transitions and turns.
It is easy on the knees and just eats the chop up!

Thanx. I`m just planning ahead for next season (beginning of April that is) and wanted to know if a Sector one design or the 60cm V3 or, even the 66 cm v3 is the best option since I alreday have both the Mako 150x40 and the Mako King in my arsenal :thumb: :thumb: . For me, the light wind issue is what needs to be fixed, hence the Sector board. We do have many days in the 10 knot region and in these winds the "racing"/slalom part of kitesurfing is very interesting.

I do wonder how my Blade Fat Lady will do with a Freerace board? just love the "phatty" with my TT-boards.

The King is 165x45, and the fins are virtually non existent..
The sector 60 / one design is 60 wide and the fins are much bigger. I'd say a sector would need half the amount of power to get going than a Mako, and go upwind twice as well..
but speed in heavy chop.. probably the Mako, though the dedicated directional of a sector makes them easy, though if there is enough wind to produce that chop would you not be on a small board?

If you want to compare a sector to a Mako king then it would have to be the Sector 54, It's tri fin, swept and is pretty good round the corners.. I do use it in waves, and do well with it.. certainly getting around better than any of the wave guys. The 54 would definitely go a lot earlier than the King, but you would have to speak to someone who knew the King vs big surfboards vs 54 to really get an honest opinion.

In my book.. go full directional or go twin tip.. don't mess around with half way house..
:-)

No question in my mind which between the Mako and the Sector is the best in small waves and nasty chop: the King. The Sector however goes far better upwind and light wind.
Haven't tried the One Design however.
I believe the North Nugget will have much of the qualities of both. You should consider it. Will let you know when I will have tried the one I have on order.

+1 North Nugget

I had a Sector 54 and the North Nugget and end selling the Sector and keep the Nugget.
I also have a Mako 150 that I use it sometimes but as a TT.......................

You are making good choices, Manuel.
Mako (Wide and King) are not good as mutants, IMHO; in that configuration they need to be more powered and don't go upwind that well - as a matter of fact, they go better upwind when the nose is behind!
Can you say a bit more than +1 about the Nugget? Something like a full review.

I agree about the Mako king. Very fun for a lightwind twintip, especially in chop. Fun as a strapless board too. Not fun as a mutant for me, but I've heard others do like it.

Alexrider,

For me the nugget handle the nasty chop better than the sector 54 because is smaller
5'0" only. The nugget also goes upwind easier because is 4 fin.

In the small waves the nugget feels more surfy than the sector 54 and the mako 150 (mutant).

For me the sector 54 is a good board for light wind, but for tasty chop and small waves
The nugget is a lot better.

I'm 160 lbs and I tried the 3 boards (mako 150, sector 54 and nugget) the same day with
my 12M lithium in 10-12 knots and I can run the nugget and the sector downwind and upwind without problem But the Mako 150 was really hard even downwind. Probably a Mako King would be different. So in my opinion the Nugget is also a great low wind board.

In days with nasty chop and no waves and with winds 15+ knots my Shinn Monk 132x41 is
My other option.
