I have tried many pairs too, and the best (for me) for kiting were O'Neil Superfreak 2mm reef ninja booties. Good because the thin flat top doesn't dig in while strapped in.

One good cut and you'll never go without something again.

you may also want to check out ZEM ninja booties. some of their models are very light, but I haven't worn any kiting. A bit more $$$.

Have a slightly different experience. My pair has lasted 3 sessions, and a friend to whom i've suggested these, haven't even lasted one! These are the best ones I ever tried when it comes to feel, but they simply can't stand to the conditions where you really need them.

Oneill Ninja, stays in place, does not slide around.

I use Vibram 5 Fingers in the summer, full booties the rest of the time. The best thing about them is that the sole will not get punctured by anything, the downside is they fill with sand easily.

I just started wearing Fila Skele-toes this summer. I had been wearing aqua socks with very thin rubber soles thinking I could grip and feel the board better, but I got a really bad oyster shell cut and needed something with a more substantial sole. Bought the skele-toes just to try them out, and think they are great. Riding strapless on my surfboard with a traction pad, I don't have any grip issues, and with the toe movement I can really feel the board. Switching to twin tip, they work fine as well. The only issue I noticed is as the water got into the 50s, my big toe gets cold after about an hour. Good luck finding what you need.

For thick and warm bootie, I love the version 1 Patagonia R3 and R4 booties. They provide me with the best connection to my board of all the booties that I have tried.

For warmer days, I have tried the thinnest Vibram Five Fingers, and do not like the connection to the board.

The best, by far, that I have tried so far have been the Zem Spli Toe Lo.
