I here this term more an more discribing blokes who do many water sports.

I am most certainly not a waterman. I kitesurf because i love to kite not because I love to be in the water. Infact kitesurfing is my only watersport. The rest involve wheels.

I'm no a waterman - I'm a spelling nazi...

I always thought "waterman" was reserved for sailors with experience and knowledge, not just kooks into water sports...?

I am proud to be a true waterman- we are a dieing breed. I live in the Caribbean so the weather dictates my activities:

Windy - Sailing or Kiteboarding
Waves- Surfing (all manner of crafts- fish, thrusters, quads, twins, singles, longdongers, funky retros)
Wind and Waves - Kitesurfing
Flatwater - Freedive Spearfishing, Stand Up Paddlebarding, long distance swimming, SCUBA
Minor Chop- Spearfishing and trolling for pelagic fish off my boat

All activities listed are serous passions of mine. I follow all the news, latest products, and basically daydream about each depending on which one I did last. Where I live, the wind does not blow all year round. We are just getting into season so I will be doing a lot of kiteboarding and sailing. Come march april, surf gets better as the trades die and when there are no waves, I am catching fish either underwater or from my boat. Then all summer is a mixture of lots of diving, some surfing from hurricane swells, fishing, and sprinkle in some SUP'ing too. My 2.5 year old son and I charge the paddleboard all the time cause we live right across the street from da beach mon. And I regularly swim 2+ miles because it is great exercise and I am able to get into a meditation like state- its awesome!

I love the ocean, she is my second wife. However, I never underestimate her power. Plus I desalinate water through reverse osmosis for my main job and captain boats on the side.

PS - Laird used to be a respected waterman but he brought the disease of standup paddle boarding and tow-in surfing to lineups around the word through his selfish promotion. It was all about the feeding the ego and making money for Laird. There are way harder chargers now in the surfing realm, Greg Long and crew have been paddling into ginormous waves including Jaws and I don't see Laird ditching the tow rope to join them.

I nominate Mark Healey as the ultimate waterman (even though I don't think he kites). Guy spears monster fish, holds his breath long time and dives super deep, charges huge and ridiculous waves, and is an all around humble guy which is what a true waterman should be. Let your actions do the talking not the mouth.

TangTonic, that lifestyle sounds awesome man. I need to get a job at a location like that.

If you feel empty when your away from the water, and crave it. Crave every thing it has to offer. Than your a waterman. Moving away from it is not an option, because it runs deep in your mind, body, and soul, your a waterman.

I'm a waterman if the budget is tight. If it's OK I'm a Coorsman. If really good I'm a Schneider Aventinus Man.

Anything frosty will work in a pinch.
