One option if your hip is not too badly degraded is a hip resurfacing, e.g. http://www.smith-nephew.com/us/professi ... surfacing/
It is less invasive than a full hip replacement and your mobility is much better afterwards.
I have had one of these done due to osteoarthritis and my other hip will need doing one day as well. I could kite normally again (actually better because the hip didn't hurt anymore) after a three month recovery period.

Hey Tony, sorry to hear this.
I just saw a TV report, where doctors in Germany tend to do operations on hips which are not really needed.
The doctor in the interview said, that it is better to take some pain killers and keep the original hip instead until it gets really bad.
I hope it helps!
Good luck for all!

Tony, I've had hip resurfacing surgery in 2010. It has workout great I kite, ride motoX and play hockey. The only issue my surgeon has advised me to be aware of is direct impact. That's why I'm doing these low impact activities Lol.
In my case, I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my early 30s. Pain and reduced motion increased dramatically into my mid/late 40s. My surgeons advise was to put it off as long as possible. Once your lifestyle was becoming compromised then it's time to act.
Research your options. Find the most experienced doctor in your area and discuss your needs..PM me if you need any more advice. Dave

Tony,

I assume your somewhere you are not actually in Montana since the "consultant" phrase is not used by the general public in the US. Likely a Scarface reference...

As for hip replacements while I am not an expert, i.e. not an orthopaedist I am very surprised that if you are able to kiteboard now someone would be recommending a hip replacement. Generally they are not done until your level of functional disability is significant and frankly as far as the real world goes if you are able to kiteboard then you are doing well by any standard measures. The reason being that like any surgery it is not without it's risks and while they are generally low they can be catastrophic especially in younger person. Also they don't last forever so if you can avoid getting it done while your younger higher chance if/when you need it you will only need one. If you get one done at 40 then chance are you might need a second which carries a higher risk and lower likelihood of good outcomes.

Perhaps time for a 2nd opinion?

In 2008 i had a serious accident that resulted in a serious fracture of the pelvis i had internal fixation of plate and screws and because of this there is degenerative changes in my hip,so not looking good for the future, now i can kitesurf better than i can walk, cant run or mountain bike,i am going to put off hip replacement for as long as possible, giving up kitesurfing is not an option, surley there is some kitesurfers with hip replacments,TONY

Pain killers and time are just bandaids and they do not fix any problems. They may even make them worse. I just had shoulder surgery on both of my shoulders from arthritis I acquired from heavy lifting. 400lbs bench, 270lbs shoulder press etc etc. At the age of 31 I woke up one morning with lots of pain and no strength in my left shoulder not a good way to start the morning.

My first doctor did not want to even discuss operating on them just cortizone to deal with the pain and inflamation. After a year of dealing with him and getting no where I found a new doctor and with in 9 months I had the first operation. In the time it took to fixed and rid of the bandaids I had started tearing my labrum and some other tissue. My right shoulder lost considerable range of motion. The cortisone shots only worked for about a month. I stopped kiting back in the spring because it caused to much pain in my shoulders and cut back to 2 days of wake boarding at the cable park a week ( strangely it did not bother my shoulders ).

I say if your hurting now and you need the operation its best to get it instead of waiting. Sure you might have to get another one later in life or so what. Why not enjoy today and plan for the future instead of plan to enjoy the future and suffer today. Besides the older you get the harder and longer rehab will be.

Tony,

I stopped kitesurfing in 2010 due to problems with my hip, I wanted to make it last so I wouldn’t need an op. Got worse when I stopped kitesurfing.

Had my hip replaced 3 months ago. Went to a specialist that does a lot of athletes, and he suggested a “Birmingham hip resurface”. I also researched a lot of other options and ended up getting the Birmingham Hip Resurface as this was the one with the least likely hood of dislocation. In Australia it has a success rate of about 95% at the 10 year mark.

So far it is great and I am able to do things I was not pre op. I am not back Kitesurfing yet, but I will be next season. I am SUPing with ease though. The Doc says that I am not to do anything high impact until after 6 months after the op, then there are no restrictions. But he did say that he would not recommend running marathons on it. I have heard of people kiting with hip resurfaces.

The only negative thing I could say so far it that because the operation is so brutal, it takes a while to get your strength back in the hip and legs.

People tend to sit and do nothing when they get a new hip, and that is the worst thing you can do. The body needs to do weight bearing exercise so the bone grows to the prothesis. Keep your new hip active to keep it working as the new bearing materials are very wear resistant.

I personally wish I had it done earlier as it was really affecting my quality of life.

Cheers,

Barrie

One of the guys at my local had a hip replacement over winter. He took 3 months of and then eased back into it. We did a 35km down winder a few weeks back in 25-30 knots and 4m of swell and easily double overhead waves. I was shitting my pants the whole time. He shreding it up and was putting me to shame... !

So I guess the answer is yes you can kite after a hip operation.
