Cabrinha Contra 17 mts 2008

Postby orwell » Mon Dec 17, 2012 12:24 am

Hi, can anyone tell me opinions about this kite ?
I have a sale oportunity to buy it new for 600 uss.
My biggest kite at this moment is an ozone edge 13 mts.
Do you think is a good idea spent that money on a 2008 kite ?
What about the upwind ability of the CONTRA ?
With the Ozone and my north race board i could go on 9 knots.

Thanks for your opinions..

I had this exact kite. It was designed to pull as much as possible, hence FAT leading edge to maximise pull, at the expense of drag and weight. It is a heavy kite that is not good at going upwind. Only good for a heavier guy on a small twintip in not too light wind. If you already have a raceboard, then the smaller edge will be MUCH better for you in my opinion. I stopped using my 17m contra when I got a race board, and sold it not too long after. My light weight fast 14m Blade Vertigo gave me better low wind since it is lighter and faster and flies better upwind.

What year North board do you have? I would rather invest in a newer race board (or a hydrofoil  ) and stay with the 13m Edge.

Hello Christoff, thanks for your opinion.
My north raceboard is 2012 the green one. The same as the ozone edge.
This is what i want to hear. But as i was reading old comments that with a CONTRA 17 they go with 6 knots, i thought it was a good change to have a low wind kite for less than 1900 uss (ozone edge 17 2012 without bar !!)

If you have the 2012 race board then what I said is even more applicable. I was on a much smaller 2010 north race ltd and the contra already was worse than a smaller fast kite that flies upwind better.

Remember to take light wind claims with a grain of salt a lot of the time, but I am sure you know that by now.

I was searching some information about that kite in the web and I see you´ve got your answer here, Orwell... :D

One more thing. The Contra has pulleys in the bar. Heavy bar pressure, I guess.

And if you were going to buy that kite brand new at Hardwind, it didnt bring the bar. Fine tuning problems if you replace the bar with any other.

Cheers :thumb:
