2012 Blade Trigger 14m vs. Fat Lady 17m

Postby Slappysan » Tue Dec 18, 2012 3:19 am

Anyone have any info on the low end ranges of the 14m Trigger vs. the Fat Lady? I know the 14m Trigger has slimmer struts similar to the Fat Lady.

I'm looking for a LW kite but the 17m seems a bit bigger than I'd need (72 kg) but the 14m might not be enough and might not relaunch in 9 knots. The 14m Trigger is much cheaper than the Fat Lady too.

I have spent time and both. The Fat Lady will get you going a couple knots earlier. I weigh 91 kilos and can start having fun with my 5 '11" Fish and F.L. in 10 knots(ocean) where I would need about 12 knots with the 14m, and at least 13-14 knots for the 12m Trigger. So because of my weight, I went with the FL & 12m combo and use 2 boards mainly(Fish and 6'2" thruster). That covers me from about 10-20 knots. With your weight, you should be able to do the same with a 14m and 10m combo, all depending on your board(s) of course. But, if you want to be the last one out(like me many times), you might want to consider the 17, as it's very nimble for a 17 and turns faster than most 14-17m kites on the market. Good luck with your decision and hope this was somewhat helpful.

I have both of these kites and had the 14m Trigger from 2011. The 2012 14m trigger has changed a fair bit and now feels closer to the FL than the 2011 did. There's a fair degree of similarity in these kites in both range and feel - I prefer the fat lady which has around 2-3 knots better low end compared to the trigger and has a fairly comparable turn speed. There's no doubt that the FL feels like a lot more kite - I'm around 90kg wet and use the FL or a 12m... Anyone want to buy a new 14m trigger?

The Fat Lady is my pick, but I weigh almost 100kilos. The 2012 Trigger 14m is different than the 2011 in that it looks much more like a Fat Lady in 2012. That being said, the Fat Lady has even skinnier struts, and the leading edge is more narrow on the Fat Lady than the 2011 Trigger 14m.

I just had 2 sessions on the new 2013 Fat Lady, and it is an evolution again on the original. Its upwind is significantly better than the 2012, seems more solid in gusts, has a better top end, and looks amazing.

Just thought I'd post an update on these kites as I've flown them both a fair bit now. The fat lady does have a lot more bottom end than the 14m (and a ton more bar pressure) but the 14m is doing it for me. I was out today in around 15 knots usting mid 20's and it was fantastic. The 14m turns fast for its size and has a great range. Its not too grunty and can haul upwind really well - its light also and drift is good. The Fat Lady is getting me out when the 14m wouldn't but staying upwind is tricky - its a fast kite also and its excellent to pop against.

Agree with KitePaddleSurf. The new Fat Lady also has noticeably better low-end. I'm also a heavy weight(200 lbs) and live in San Diego, "light wind capital". The Fat Lady/Sweet Potato combo is the best I've found so far for "Fun" light wind kiting in waves. :D

I own both 2013 Fat Lady and 14m Trigger. In 2013 they reduced bar pressure, so both kites have similar low pressure and are very comfortable to ride. 14m is still faster turning and more fun.

If you looking for a light wind kite, 14m is not a substitute for Fat Lady. I rode both side to side, and 14m just doesn't have any power in winds below 10 knots. Using the same board (door) I can ride FL comfortably, when on 14m I just sink (I'm 80kg). FL has at least 3-4 knots lower wind range.

How is the Low end on the 14 Trigger? I heard it turns very fast.

14m is hard to ride below 10knots, at least with my 80kg. It turns very fast for its size, faster than 12m Cabrinha SB I had.

High end is very good on 14m Trigger. I was out on it 2 days ago when most people were on 12m kites and lower, and I didn't even touch depower! I was rewarded with lofty 8-10 meters jumps, had a blast :D

What board did you try the 14M Trigger in under 10 Knots??
