Uncorrected Myopic eye and wind speed estimates

Postby SupaEZ » Fri Jan 04, 2013 1:47 pm

I have studied the accuracy of kiters with uncorrected Myopia trying to pin point wind speeds

Being nearsighted means that the world is in sharp focus only at a relatively close distance to kiter

Many kiters wear their prescription eyeglasses to drive...watching TV...going to the movies

But many do not wear contact lenses for the sport of kitesurfing

Maybe they feel that their vision is not that bad ....
...and the idea of putting in contact lenses seems like a lot of hassles

There are other options to contacts like refractive surgery
You should talk to your optometrist / ophthalmologist to see if it is a wise option for you

For low power myopia...like around ...- 1.00 D.......contacts are really EZ to get used to

This eye chart shows how a patient with low myopia sees

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Snellen-myopia.png

That goes to show you that telltales of light wind speeds by looking at leaves / palms in trees.....
....water surface...surrounding area......and even your own kite...

......when not seeing at least 20/20..........can yield imprecise estimates...

......by "eyeballing" the wind speed with uncorrected vision.......

.....Happy New Year KF....and please visit your eye doctor at least once every 2 years.......

I use lenses...having -2.5
No problem since 12 years!

Lost maybe 4 lenses so far.

I always use sunglasses to protect my eyes and lenses.

Without lenses it is hard to see...and dangerous in my opinion!

i don t wear glasses while practicing sports. it s blurry past 15m ( can t read signs, can t see tangles near the kite), as far as i see other kites, kiters, their lines.... it s good enough :)

but i wear sunglasses, all the time.... sun is not my eye's friend.

OldnBroken... were you over 40 when you had the laser surgery? If so did you notice any loss in your ability to read or see close up?
I've been wearing contacts all my life. Went to get a laser surgery consult and they warned me that because of my age I may end up having to wear reading glasses after the surgery, so I didn't go ahead with it cause the contacts are not really a problem for me and I do not have any need for reading glasses now.

I wear daily lenses so I never have to worry about eye infections from all junk that gets flushed into them while on the water. They all so end up being cheaper than losing a 2 week lense on the first day I put it in to a crash.

Plan on getting surgery in the next few weeks. I'm scared yet excited all in one to have it done.

sounds nice...happy for you!

still I worry as well...and I am fine with my lenses...using daily lenses as well...so no problem loosing them. But really rare.

56 years old. Had PRK in June 1995. Have had better than 20/20 vision ever since. I bought some reading glasses several years ago. Never use them for reading. I do use them when doing ultra close detail work like splicing 1mm paraglider lines.
