This eye chart shows how a kiter with low myopia ( -1.00D) sees in the distance

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Snellen-myopia.png

So what i am saying is that with their "impaired uncorrected" vision.....(they only see good up close)
...they cannot tell how much the wind is "really"....blowing...especially in below 8kn of wind

Just take a look a the chart enclosed...see how blurred it is at only 1.0D of myopia :o

I am convinced that at "22 meters" and beyond.........it's all a big blurrrrrrrrrrr

.... :thumb: ... Supafocus is a must for a kiter and safer for all the other kiters of the water................

But ultimately my topic remains about impaired vision and impaired LW speed estimates

.........     :D :D :D ..................................................................

Based on the ages of most of us on this thread, I would say that presbyopia would be the major impediment to wind estimation because you can't see the tiny wind forecast on your phone. This is however, the point where your profession meets your hobby, so I won't question your opinion.

No problem since 12 years!

Lost maybe 4 lenses so far.

I always use sunglasses to protect my eyes and lenses.

Without lenses it is hard to see...and dangerous in my opinion!
I approve your message Toby :thumb:

voodoospirit wrote:i don t wear glasses while practicing sports. it s blurry past 15m ( can t read signs, can t see tangles near the kite), as far as i see other kites, kiters, their lines.... it s good enough :)

but i wear sunglasses, all the time.... sun is not my eye's friend.
Please Voodospirit be careful out there......my nearsighted fellow kiter

Do you find yourself asking people on the beach what size kite people are on......
.....because you can't really see sharply that far ?

Can you really tell how much the wind is blowing also ?

Do like Toby does ( and me )..very simple....get fitted with some soft contact lenses
There has been great advancements in 2012....we can fit almost any RX power
....even with strong astigmatism

I personally only wear my single vision distance RX soft lenses when Kitesurfing

The rest of the time...work.....etc...i wear all purpose digital progressive (ar) anti-reflective eyewear

I even have a pair of digital progressive (ar) just for computer and near only...when i do KF :D

Find yourself a great optician and bring him your RX's for glasses and contacts

........for 2013...make yourself see perfect...do not limit yourself....to 15 meters distance :thumb:

Thank you again for your comment

I wear toric soft contacts. If i tried to kite without them i'd be lost at sea.My astigmatism is so bad I was turned down for any type of corrective surgery! To risky. Lost a few contacts,no big deal.

I just had Lasik yesterday! I was very apprehensive about getting it done. I think everyone that has it done goes thru the same feelings. It is amazing waking up the next day and having better than 20/20. I now have 20/15 vision and no longer need to think about contacts. I can not wait till I can try out my new eyes on the water :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: !

If you are on the fence about getting it done then do it if you are a good candidate. In all honesty it is the best money I have ever spent.

I am very happy for you ...you must have been tired of wearing contacts

Can you share your age....don't have to be exact

Are you in your 20's...30's...40's....

Thanks :thumb:

Make sure you protect your eyes as often as possible against UV radiation with sunglasses

I'm 34. I plan on getting some glasses for kiting and wake this year.

I used to windsurf and hated contacts while riding. I then had lasik done when when I was about 38 and loved it. This was just about when I started kiting and it lasted for about 10 years before I had to have either another adjustment or go another route due to my eyes changing too much in the last few years.

The cost was too high to get another lasik proceedure done again, so I went back to contacts and have never lost one in 3 years and have no problems now with contacts. Newer lenses are much more permeable, so they stay more moist than older lenses. I'm supposed to replace my lenses monthly (more like 3 months) and the only thing that sucks is my near vision is worse with the contacts, so I need reading glasses if needing to see things up close.

I can see well enough without contacts to windsurf, but wear daily contacts for kitesurfing so I can see whats happening with the kite lines, bridle etc.
