I tore a ligament in my ankle and what you are describing resembles what happened to me.
Suffered from it a couple of years even after physio and a 3 month rest. The only thing that helped, believe it or not, was SUP.
I found that SUP is the ultimate physio for anything to do with the waist down.
Try SUP in moderate choppy waters, it hurts a bit at first but then things improve fast.

Hope you recover fast. and even though the wind is blowing you have to give it a rest.
Good luck !

I broke my ankle and my fib back in December, had six weeks in cast but kept it moving (was not meant to bear weight on it but was hard not too)

I was back snowboarding/snowkiting (before the cast was removed) and the day after the cast was removed we had a week of solid overhead surf with 5m winds.....my kind of physio!

I could hardly walk on it as so painful but was fine kitesurfing (surfboard not TT) snowboarding etc

At the same time as this my wife (married in Sept) had a new ACL in her knee so we were both hobbling around on crutches for weeks...pretty funny really especially showing up at the beach in a van covered in "learn to kitesurf with the experts" all over it.

I'm like new now, Sarah will be a while longer..hopefully by May

Above knee 3 nerves go down to the ankle ,you can touch and find them by yourself.from bad movements those nerves get in wrong position and go in tension causing pain to foot ,but the cause could be up above knee.
try to massage that area and release them ,wait before recovery .
Chek the other knee too and try to control correct position of other side nerves, find difference.
massage with energy,do not be afraid,it will cause no problem anycase.
I say it could be!!!!!! of course I am not sure without touching.
chek on web about these arguments, spend some time trying to understand your body, doctors are outside, you feel your inside like no one.
Someone in some way is always paying surgery!!!!!

Hopefully not too serious Duke if able to carry on Kiting at the time. Unfortunately ankles one of the most complicated and vital joints we have, so hard to rest it completely. Need to assess whether ligament or tendon damage or just a 'plain' sprain. Recommended advice will probably be rest and Ice - Ice certainly the magic treatment. And arnica. Get some of that cream and apply daily. And don t rush back too quickly, however tempted you may be - soft tissue damage different to breakages and fractures,. Rush back and hurt it again and you risk damaging it and weakening it further , which will keep you out for longer. Ankles do a lot of work for us when we re out on that water and you catch it badly again before it s fully healed and you compound the problem. Good luck mate

I like to stick with R.I.C.E
Rest - Ice - Compress - Elevate

I do this with any injury - I also switch between applying heat and then applying cold to the injured area.

This turned out interesting... like a TV show when you always wait for the next episode to come in order to see what happens :P

R.I.C.E. and arnica are awesome. Don't forget that elevating a swollen part by putting it up on the couch doesn't cut it. Need to get it above the heart, as high as you can, pretty easy for the ankle, not so much with knees. Another great homeopathic supplement that has anti-inflammatory properties is Zyflamend. Also when it comes time to get back to something active on that ankle, put some heat on it first.

Loose the straps! It does wonders!
I have never gon back to straped boards since I started strapless wave riding.
On the flats, use a skim!
