Best kite for unhooked tricks between 8 and 12 knots?

Postby joandani » Wed Feb 27, 2013 10:55 am

Hi guys,

I tested a spleene x-19 a few days ago with 9-10 knots with a clash 134, and i liked its unhooked skill, doesnt stall or collapse at all, but it was the first big foil kite I tried. For boosting, I thought the kite was too slow, but for unhooked with some handle passes it was very good in my opinion.

Someone can told me which kite is better for doing freestyle ( i would like to do unhooked stuff, but also some big jumps if its possible)? it doesnt matter if it is foil or normal kite... may be a dyno 17 or the new naish draft? I had never tried a big kite except the spleene... some one can help?

Thanks!

I think all those kites will be slow for turning. Both the Dyno and Draft are fairly high AR and at 17 meter probably not the best for fast turning? I say this having only flown the Dyno for a short run and I have not ridden the 17 draft yet.

I would consider something like the Naish Fly. A little lower AR and light. Turns fast for its size.

I would recommend that Speed3 15DLX should be short listed for your evaluation. It has nice depower capabilities to set up unhooked but when needed it has a lot of power. I'd say based on my tests on snow and low wind (around 4-6 knots) that Speed3 15DLX has similar kind of power to Core 19m what I felt (to have some kind of reference for LEIs).

For the reference for your X-19 tests (I've also run X-19 a couple of times as 3 local kiters have them). X-19 is a bit more powerful kite than Speed3 15DLX. But X-19 problem IMO is narrow depower range. When you redirect the kite it pulls you so hard that you easily loose board edge and jumps are not that high and powerful. But as unhooked wakestyle(?) you don't redirect that much so I doubt if it is a problem for you. And you can do low wind freestyle with it, it is the rider who does the tricks :)

For the ultimate then there is Speed3 21 which is more powerful than X-19 if you are aiming at unhooked at low winds. But Speed3 21 has more depower allowing holding the edge on load&pop when hooked in. Some say that 21 is the cable park (in good sense) with good unhooked pull without backstall already in low winds. And when winds increase it does not turn into big (downwind pulling or pulling like a truck/train etc). 21 also jumps well considered the wind speeds you ride it. But it is slow to turn so that's why I recommend to consider 15DLX for nice overall kite starting from 8kn.

For unhooked tricks, slow is your friend. If you are riding a high rocker board, you want a grunty g
kite. With a flat, efficient board you can use a more near-the-edge-of-the-windowy kite.

fast turning? only for a kiteloop handle pass needed, no?
The rest is keep the kite low and pop, all it needs is power!

interesting post, we have to continue please... it would be a good think to do a comparative.

I didnt know about the FS15 DLX... thnx!
The Fly in which size does it come? which one will be better for freestyle? 15 FS Dlx, spleene x19, naish draft, north dyno? maybe a Zephyr... (but I was surprised when i tested the spleene in 10 knots, there was also a zephyr that had someone else and he was going downwind, i dont know if it was because of the rider, or the kite)

I have an option I like, cause with 15FS DLX I could practice freestyle, but the thing I liked is that i could also boost higt I supose, but if with 10 knots i couldnt be able to do a decent powerful unhooked stuff (always thinking about a normal twintip like a Clash), maybe i would prefer a big one with slower turning, but better pop for unhook in 9-12 knots and forget boosting... you know what I mean? May be is a little bit difficult to explain :P It all depends with how many knots you can do some decent unhooked freestyle stuff... The perfect kite i need now would be one that i could do freestyle and boost in 9-12 knots, but dont know if it exist, cause i didnt tested anyone except spleene x19 :S

Thnx to everyone
