Abaco Kiting

Postby TPink » Sat Mar 16, 2013 6:36 pm

Heading down to do a week + bareboat out of Marsh Harbor, 40' cat.
would like to bring my smaller tt and a couple kites, but not
sure if it's worth all the airline nightmares/costs. United, :( unfortunately.

Anyone done that area? looking for spots and wind projections.
we will be staying relatively close to the mid eastern abaco cays.

Thanks!!

Worth it. Elbow cay and in around Marsh harbor has tons of great potential. I've surfed, and windsurfed and plan to kite it one day.

Our favorite site was Tahiti Beach on Elbow key.
It's also a great place for non kiters to hang out.

When you are going? If a good front comes through now you should be set for wind. You may be able to line up a board rental, maybe, through http://www.lubberslanding.com/activitie ... ng_LL.html . If the wind is on or likely to be, I would say you would be nuts to not bring kites. There are nice riding spots throughout the Sea of Abaco and surrounds.

I think I kited everyday, when we chartered a boat there about 5 years ago. Generally speaking kiting and sailing don't mix, since you are looking for a quiet anchorage somewhere close to where you can launch a kite. The Abacos is an exception. There are literally hundreds of places you can anchor and either walk or dingy to a kite launch area, both waves and flat water. Some of the beaches you will have all to yourself, no where will you find a crowd. It was a great trip, not on par with the BVI in terms of restaurants or non kiting things to do but a great trip just the same. I suspect you will be very disappointed if you don't bring your gear.
