This was
posted to reddit a few days ago too.
The whole thing just pisses me off; both the incident itself and the way it's presented. The iMovie trailer bullshit is only the coup de grace. To reuse my own material:
The amount of dumb going on in this video is off the charts.
TOO MUCH WIND - Probably not.
TOO CLOSE TO THE BEACH - Probably, yes.
WITH POWER LINES - Definitely too close.
AND A BEGINNER - Why are you at this beach? WHO'S IDEA WAS THIS!?!?!
Oh.
HOW TO ELECTROCUTE A KITE - More like: HOW TO FRY A FINN
The best part: No personal responsibility or appreciation of the gravity of the situation. The video could have been useful as an example of what can happen when we make poor decisions, "Hey guys, I almost killed myself by making some bad choices. Here's what I did wrong, and here's what happened. Think about these things when you go out."
Instead we get: "There was too much wind! The beach was too close! Who put those power lines there?! Kite go zap! Hahahaha! Benjamin Franklin!"
This is a sport which demands discipline and personal responsibility in order to have dangerous fun in a safe way. This video demonstrates none of that. There's only one worthwhile take-away: Don't be this guy--especially not with the glasses.
I'm sure this Lare is a nice dude; but shit like this only tells me someone needs to slap some sense into him. Can anyone in Borcay do that for me?
Maybe I'm just curmudgeonly and spiteful 'cause it's cold here in the great white north and seeing idiots enjoying idyllic surroundings is too much to bear.

What was the effect on the rider? I still have never heard of anyone actually being electrocuted while kiteboarding.

We had a newbie kid here a few years ago where his kite went over the powerlines, which lifted him up and into the lines.
Something broke, and as he fell to the ground, it arked and whacked him with a jolt of electricity.
He then fell to the ground and broke his pelvis on the guardrail below.
Posting up shit like this (and other dumb shit like tow ups) is what causes bans. We had quite a few tow up videos from our area posted up all over the place last week, from our #1 kite spot.
Dumbasses...
Happy Kiting!

posting this should prevent people doing stupid shit. Posting does not get us banned. People doing stupid shit will. Videos like this shows people what could go wrong. This way they think (maybe) before going out at a dangerous place. Maybe they look around and check for danger (after watching a clip like this) before they decide to kite there.
Tow up videos sometimes glorify the danger, a kite in powerlines, not very glorifying, and not something "kids" look up to. Unless they are a bit like a Dodo...
