The Salt and Speed event has been running at the V W Transporter Arena in Southern France.

Got within 1 knot of the World Record so far.

This area looks like a great spot to kite and learn to kite. Is there some reason why its not famous for kiting?

It's a private owned area" Belonging to a salt producer.

On top of that it's within a bird sanctuary so only for the priveliged. I had the pleasure of being in Salin De Giraud for the worlds last July and it was awesome, only downside was access and the concentration of salt on the ground and in the water. UK No1 speed rider Dave Williams had a pair of board shorts that stood up on their own when they dried out they were that salty.

I reckon the record can be broken down there betwen Alex and Rob no problem.

Watching the Vimeo footage, I was struck by how similar our salt ponds are where I live to those in video. I live in the northern part of the San Francisco Bay Area, and we have a bunch of these salt ponds that have been turned over to the state of California and they are being converted back to wetlands.

We have a bunch of these huge flat water ponds, most of them just knee deep, and no one kiting on them. During spring and summer we get consistent 10-12 meter winds with some 5-7m days.

One pond gets a sort of grass that grows to the top of the water, and creates a completely mirror flat surface, even in the highest of winds-you just can't drop your kite.
