New Orleans

Postby Kevin123 » Tue Apr 09, 2013 9:45 pm

Hey so I'm going to be in New Orleans for a conference next week. Looking for inside info re: kiting potential, hoping to bring some gear and try to ride. Looks like Lake Pontchartrain not too far from downtown and would work on the right winds.

Any place to rent a board? I found cat5kiteboarding, was going to maybe contact them

Possible wind this time of year? I was thinking just take my 12m which I can basically ride 15-25 mph

Are people wearing full wetsuits or maybe shorties?

Any info appreciated, thanks.

Bucktown on the lake is the spot we all go on a northerly wind. Henderson point in Mississippi is where we go on a south wind. You should be fine with a 12m. I wore a full 3:2 suit today, while another fella wore just trunks. Being that you are from Chicago, I suggest a spring suit, or none at all if you're super cramped for space. No place to rent a board around here. New canal (in the lake) and Henderson point (by bay St. Louis in Mississippi) are the 2 weather stations to use. I think that just about covers it. We're having a pretty sweet week this week around 15 knots

Hmmm...my wife and I are going to NO in May for a vacation. We picked NO because we thought there was no kiting there (she doesn't kite). However... How is the wind in May? Do you have any pictures of the launches, etc. that you can share?

No pictures, but the bucktown launch is kinda sketchy. Actually, pretty damn sketch if no one is there to show you. Henderson point in Mississippi is a great spot for kiting. Long sandy beach and stays shallow for a couple hundred yards.

here's a good overview of all spots:

Lake Pontchartrain is your best bet. If you don't mind driving a bit, Grand Isle is a blast. Also Bay St Louis, Gulfport and Biloxi have great places.

All the info and pictures are at www.cat5kiteboarding.com

May is usually pretty good but the breeze is mostly from the south. The in-town launches on the South Shore of Lake Pontchartrain are only ridable in North winds, i.e. winter. For South winds we ride at New Orleans' other beaches; mostly Henderson Point Mississippi about 1 hr east.

Come ride with us. Bring a 14m and a 12m, also bring the wife.
