Anyone tried the lagoons on Fuerteventura?

Postby alohasurfer73 » Wed Apr 17, 2013 5:55 pm

Hi guys!
I'm just about to book a kitesurfing trip around 20 May. Choosing between the lagoons on Fuerteventura in Sotavento, and El Gouna in Egypt. I want flat water and as many windy days as possible. Can yoy help me decide? Have heard its mostly off shore in Sotavento lagoon and gusty, but I dont know, anyone tried it?

I tried the lagoons and didn´t like it.
You get only 2 hours of kiting with very shalow water, very hard sand botton, and if there are 3 guys with you is crowded.
The wind is gusty, the sea is choppy, Fuerteventura is the worst kitetrip I´ve done.

I tried Fuerteventura too!

Cotillo Lagoons = They are epic. Steady wind/20-25 knots/Flat water. Is where all pros do their trainings during the PKRA but as post before said 6 or 7 guys with you is crowded and in august i think kitting is banned there.

Sotavento Lagoon = strong wind and very gusty. 30-40 knots/Flat water.

There are other spots as Flag Beach, Cotillo, but they are in the sea!

Be careful! In Fuerteventura you are surrounded by rocks!

The strong point in Fuerteventura is that is very cheap and you always have wind! If you want the perfect conditions spend your money in other places!

But for me Fuerteventura is cool!

We in the North of the Island do not recognize Sotavento as Fuerteventura.

If you have not been to the North or the West coast of the south, then you have not really kited Fuerteventura.

Forget the Sotavento lagoon! Only good with easterly wind..which is during winter, only few days per year. The rest is dangerously gusty! I once jumped with a gust, few meter high, gust gone, dropped down like a stone, my head hit the ground...luckily just sand...then stoped kiting there and prefered to work instead!

El Gouna does not really offer flat water, rather a bit choppy. But wind def. better!

Hi Gunnar

Can you tell me for the next time i will visit the island in which spots do you ride in the west coast of the south? I don't remember any spot there!. I rode only in Flag Beach, Corralejo, Cotillo Lagoon, Cotillo, Sotavento.

Unfortunately I stayed only in Sotavento, it was 2009 and I didn´t know kiteforum at that time, where I could take good advices to go and kite. I left Sotavento with 2 broken ribs, same situation Toby described.

You should check out La Pared on the West coast of the South. It's about a 15 minute Drive from Sotavento. Cross onshore and pretty decent waves. Also it's clean and usually around 20 Knots.

Are we talking about the same "La Pared"? We took a drive down ther and getting safely across the mountain pass down to La Pared was at least 30-45 min driving. Then the conditions!! O myyyy, horrific waves, breaking all over the place. For my limited skills of waves if was a big NOOOO, NOOO to go out in that "Water-Hell". It would certainly have killed me kiting there, no kidding!
