Mt Washington on 4-22-13

Postby rvrrat » Tue Apr 23, 2013 4:35 am

:o This is somethin' I have been wanting since I met Zeb in Utah some years back. Kiting up on Mt Washington in New Hampshire. Zeb warned me not to take it lightly. I know this is no place to do that. A good friend and I hiked and skinned up 3 miles from Pinkham Notch to the floor of Tuckermans Ravine and then climbed up the Lobser Claw to the Alpine Garden at the base of the Upper Snowfields. I got my 9m Frenzy out and cruised around a bit on the lower, western edge of the snowfields. I then took off for the summit goin' east and up. The further I got the firmer the snow got and the more intense the wind got. It wasn't pretty but I made it to the summit. Put my kite away and walked the Auto road back to the west to find some softer snow. Skied back down to the Alpine Garden and then back down the Lobster Claw. I'm not sure if I will take my kite back up there or not. It was gnarly. Conditions change fast. Mt Washington has the highest recorded wind speed on the planet at 231 mph. Definetly one of the biggest moments in my snowkite life! JR

Nice work JR! Can't beat accomplishment of a years long goal. Looks like a true kite adventure. Sometimes the snow and wind aren't ideal, but those survival days can make for some great memories. So long as you make it back alive to tell the tale-

 Thanks guys. It was a big adventure for me. Matt I know what you mean about coming back alive. I wish I could have done a better job with it. When I hit the frozen surface things went bad. I was able to recover but the possibility of being drug into the rocks was real. Gotta keep at it and get more skills. And Robertovillate, I was able to get one sesh in Michigan this season. I got to ride on the ice at the very northern tip of Lake Michigan called Bay de Noc on the south shore of the UP. I was truckin' across Rt 2 lookin' for a spot and found this. It was fun to go back and forth over the pressure ridge that formed and drifted over. Zeb, I should have tracked you down. My schedule had me movin' and I only had one day to get it and the conditions were saying go. I hope I can catch another window. I would luv to join you on your turf! JR
