best SUP for super light wind kiting

Suggestions? I weigh 200 pounds and am thinking of packing a 20 pound cooler full of root beer and sandwiches, is there an 8 footer with 200+ liters of flotation and durable enough to take a tumble at 20 knots?

I'm 200lb also , & don't have the $ for a SUP ; so shaping my own
is the only Real alternative.

I bin looking at the new Windsurfer shapes , some are thick and Wide ; perhaps
a stretched copy of something like that ?
I NEED Wide.
---I wonder just How "Thick" would be Too Thick ?---
A guy Could make sections on the deck that were hinged to open & put
his folding paddle and cold beer inside !

I would want the fin retractable like the rudder on a catamaran ; just pull
on a cord & it goes Byby.

You guys got Way more balance than me, so you can probably get away
with a narrower board.

There's a oriental guy in San Diego that uses his SUP & a 4 or 5M on handles
to pull him & his dog around Stinkies ; he Velcros the paddle to the deck.

And Last : would want a way to reel the kite out,(make the lines longer or shorter) ;so
now the kite doesn't really need to float for relaunch off the water !
The Light days at Mohave , Darn wind just disappears between cycles ; unless
the kite had an electric motor, no way will it stay up.

tks dylan, though with 220 pounds of my weight + the gear means 190 liters is equivalent to your 120 liters, so 200liters still seems right if I need the capability of carrying 3 kites a cooler and an extra board with me. Maybe 190 liters would be ok.

I am really tempted to get that cheap pelican flow 106. It's entirely made of plastic like a kayak it has to be able to take a lot of abuse.

just out of curiosity why would you want to carry 3 kites, a cooler, and an extra board on your SUP? sounds like you need a houseboat, not a board

Is there a specific reason why you want to use a sup with a kite? If you are looking for lightwind performance a raceboard or a foilboard is a lot more fun.

A bit too big tho, lol. think of the adventures you can have with a sup you can kite to beaver island with a tent and your twintip have a great time and kite back. You can't paddle a raceboard 10 miles over open ocean back to land, if the wind dies you are screwed.

Good point. I agree. I was just curious. Seen a few try to use them just for riding...and it does not look that fun...and yes I have tried and not liked them for that.

If you want to use it for traveling to other spots it is very different. I would just get the huge one. Or a boat. Or an inflatable.

The problem on big SUP's, is setting a rail. On a small it is having a lot of stuff with you. Once you get a big one you can add thingys on the nose to attach the gear you want, but that will change the characteristics of the board, and it becomes heavy and even harder to put on a rail.

Sounds like a good time! That is the fun part about the raceboard too, go exploring upwind instead of just reaching back and forth. As you said though, when the kite goes down in 5 knots, you're just floating in on your raceboard.

I did an internship in San Diego for Jan-Feb 2007. There is NO WIND in San Diego, it was pretty bad. There was this old guy with an old station wagon filled to the max with kite and windsurf gear and boards on the roof. When everyone else was sitting on the beach waiting for wind, he would go out on his giant old windsurf board using a beach umbrella as a sail. Sometimes two umbreallas, sometimes a trainer kite. He usually was able to go upwind, even with the beach umbrella. He also brought a paddle in case the wind completely died.

Maybe an old windsurf board with a centerboard would be even better for going upwind? It would definitely be cheap.

This is more what "i" had in mind, strictly for the 20-mile camping expeditions .

Get rid of the sail & mast, then imagine
closing in the deck where he now sits, making it Flat with water-tight panels to walk on , maybe
a swiveling seat in the center but real low to the deck . ---->

There would be room Inside for your TT ; & the swiveling seat could be on a tract
so your weight is Always on the windward side, as you fly your kite . You wouldn't
need to roll up on a rail with this, cause the retractable dagger board dose all the work !
Maybe add some-kinda super low-drag - super-cavitation , stepped hull ?

Then paddle with conventional oars in the centered-seat for , when the wind Sucks.
