Hi,
I am visiting Tampa next week on business. Do the winds this time of year make it worth bringing my gear? If so, will it be 9m/13m or 13m/17m weather?
Lastly, I'm staying at a hotel just south of the airport. What kite spot(s) would be good to check out? I'll have a rental car but would prefer not to spend too much time driving around.

you might get lucky with a big kite really really early tuesday morning on the sunshine skyway north bay side with east winds.

otherwise you might get lucky with a big kite in the afternoons with west winds on the gulf beaches.
you just gotta be on the beach if it does cause it only seabreezes a few hours and if you aren't already there, you missed it

Cypress park is right by the airport. Westerlies are good there. Picnic island south of there is also good for later westerly sea breezes. Google Tampa kite launches and you'll find lots of info...big kite is a good idea...

that's how the saying goes... "if it looks good, you missed it"
Tuesday is looking decent for the state, but the season is pretty much over... I'd bring the 17 and hope for the best

Hmmm, well I'm thinking maybe I won't bother then since it'll probably mean an extra baggage fee for potentially nothing. Thanks for the info everyone!

Thank you for your sacrifice. Because if you don't bring your gear then it will DEFINITELY be blowing! Check out this local website that shows the local Tampa / St. Pete launch spots and wind forecasts:

Well I didn't bring my kite gear but I did drive over to Cypress Point Park and I have to say you guys are really lucky to have a nice place like that ... tons of free parking, clean wide sandy beach with no one there, and shallow for a huge ways out. Jealous!

Glad you like our spots. Cypress is OK, but we have quite a few spots that are better over in St. Pete. If you're still in town Sunday/ Monday, hit me up and I will loan ya some gear so you can get a sesh.

Wow, thanks for that very generous offer, but I'm back home in Toronto already. I just wanted to mention how much I liked that spot. Maybe next time
