Hatteras Water Temp & Beach Fire Rules

Postby Ecoastprock » Fri May 10, 2013 3:41 am

Hey guys! Leaving for Hatteras on Sunday. Can anyone give me an update on the water temps on the sound and ocean sides.

Heard a rumor you can have fires on the beach? Is that allowed? What are the rules?

Also, this will be my first combined surf/kite/sup trip. I have been to hatteras before but not since i started kiting. We are staying in Waves just south of Rodanthe from May12th-19th.

I mainly kite in waves but am bringing my girl along and she surfs but is intimidated by kiting in big waves. I plan on spending some time on the sound side while she gets more comfortable. Can anyone recommend a good spot with shallow water, calm safe/fun and uncrowded??

We are staying for a week and it looks like the first few days are going to be pretty mellow, light winds and small waves, then maybe some 25+mph winds later in the week and hopefully a cleanup day with some good waves.

Thanks

I haven't been down there since March, but the sensor at Oregon Inlet Marina is reading 71.1 deg F.

There are tons of places on the sound side. Lots of opportunities for downwinders. http://locations.splocs.com/kitesurf/co ... a-USA.html

Kitty Hawk Kites lets you ride there and they have air hoses to pump your kites. The launch is a little sketchy. You stand in the water and someone stands up on the dock/bulkhead with your kite, so you are one line length away from a 6 foot wall. Also one line length downwind to your left is a rock jetty. It is really shallow though, so beginners can have someone walk away from the land to launch their kites.

Most of the soundside launches are pretty narrow, but again, you can walk out because it is so shallow. Kite point is a little wider in one spot, but I don't think you can go there anymore unless you buy the offroad permit. You used to be able to park on the road and walk out to the beach, but last time I went by there were a bunch of no parking signs.

This Spring has been the coldest I have ever seen but it is warming now. Bring boardshorts, spring suit, 3/2 full and everything in between and you should be covered for ocean and sound.

There is a one page "permit" for beach fires you should download and print a few copies off of the park service web site. So far they have not checked. Fires are to be out by 10PM which is crazy but so far it is not enforced. Follow most of the common sense rules on the permit so you do not set the dunes on fire! Have fun!
