Hence why I tether when I can. If you get the downwind spot right, with the upwind walk angle right you can really avoid that scraping. That being said after so many years I rarely get it right and always get that damn scraping! its like sand paper on my soul....
there is a lot of confusing kite advise floating around out there. but not knowing the different between being unhooked and holding the bar with both hands (like when riding unhooked), and being unhooked holding the harness loop in one hand with the bar at full depower, (like when self launching) doesnt help. there is nothing wrong with being unhooked (holding harness loop in hand, bar at full depower, leashed to a single line) while self launching. it is recommended. for those self launching hooked in, be prepared to release.
Gear: SCREAMER 7/9/12/14 for Free Style. Not to forget the SCREAMER 10 LTD for my one go kite. SURF 8 & 12 for the waves. RENEGADE 6.5 and 9 for all around kiting. And some times I use my son's JUNIOR PRO 4 when it blows 45+ for the waves. Just try the EPICKITES and you will see for yourself.

You have many ways of self launching by yourself. This video will show you one way. But again the best and safest way is when some one else helps you.
The first video is totally nuts!
The guy stays with the kite almost at the zenith with big obstacles downwind, just to self land the kite
I hope nobody is learning from him

Hey Bello gvironda
Once again you have many ways of landing or launching your kite. Do what ever you wish but these videos I made also shows you one way to do it. I never said it was the safest way but it's one way of landing or launching your kite if you are by yourself. Take it or leave it.
Now concerning "I hope nobody is learning from him..." well you don't know how many responses I got from people doing the same thing. Plus I got few people that did try it and sent me a private message thanking me about the video. So again it's your choice. Ciao bello.
You can get fancy if you like, but I don't like fancy.
this is exactly right. (although i wouldnt say you need to use your QR in a control situation like landing your kite, you could just take the harness loop off like normal.)
but the point is, although we can drop the kite LE into the wind at the edge of the wind with tension on the high centerline, and it is a nice trick ( i do it all the time, all wind conditions, etc) it is a trick, and you can blow it. use the leash to self land, that is what its there for. if you got a bar with a shitty leash/disable system, then get a new bar.
