What is the best watch and functions for kitesurfing?

Postby dejavu » Fri Jun 14, 2013 11:36 pm

I have used a Garmin 310XT watch for some time now. Great functions but not as many as the pathfinder. I do like the GPS to track sessions though. What are the best options and functions on watches for kitesurfing?

I use the Suunto Ambit, it was very good until the 2.0 came out, it stopped working.
Must be copied from Microsoft's forced upgrade scheme.

Since you like that one, maybe update to the newest one, the 910XT?

I read the details on the Suunto Ambit 2S and it looks impressive and a little more modern. The 910XT Garmin I didn't think would do much more than the 310XT. The old pathfinder I have has good time and time zone display, tides, baro, etc but no GPS and the 310XT has been good to track runs.

The Garmin Fenix is supposed to be the competitor to the Ambit

I'm also curious as to which functions you want for kitesurfing. (I almost missed a friend's performance the other day after losing track of time on the water!)

Obviously GPS is nice so you know the distance you've ridden and your speed. But what else is helpful or particularly interesting and why? e.g. barometric pressure - could you use a dropping barometric pressure to anticipate the wind dying?

I feel like the Pebble would be an awesome platform if it had integrated a GPS chip...

It maps your tracks, so you can test different equipment and find optimum upwind angles.

What would be the ultimate.........Nice big time function, alarm- with vibrate, world time for travel, altimeter (I also do skiing), Barometer/air pressure,(weather watch when you at the beach all day you can see deterioration or improvement), waterproof, tide, GPS, wind speed would be good, touch screen display, MP3, phone, 000/911- emergency button......mmmmmm done.
