It was kind of obvious to me that any kind of play in waves is super fun long before kiteboarding hit the scene.

It's like asking if snowboarding is better in the mountains!

[Consider the following:

Everyone has a different set of life experiences and sensory experiences
Some people have never having been on or near a big wave before
Without having experienced a sensation or knowing the context of a situation, one may lack a frame of reference to "get it"

Keep on riding :)
Every wave's a big wave until you ride something bigger. You are right. It's a graduated scale and equally impressive at each step. It's fun! If you are coming from a flat water background, you have a lot of fun graduated steps ahead of you! Every wave's a big wave 'til you ride something bigger.

If you came from a background of Surfing, you would immediately appreciate that kiting can give you the same feeling and more. If you Surf the wave, It's faster and you catch so many more waves in one session, you can go out in conditions that you wouldn't attempt with just a board. You could describe it like having a an engine you can switch on and off at will.
It also makes (with surfing in mind) small and close-out waves (which would not be rideable with just a surf board) fun.
You can get radical with ease as you have the kite to pull you out.
Not having to paddle in and stand up means you get on a wave very quickly. Of course if you have never experienced the power of the wave on its own, you may not know where it is. But just watch surfers in action and you will soon understand where it's all happening.

You can take it to whatever level you want. small, medium, big … (and yeah you can argue about size forever) Strapped or strapless, in the end it's about that connection with the ocean's energy.
And then off course you can use it as ramps and kickers.
But watch those waves they can give you a thumping!

I like some flat water riding but man, waves are fun…

Waves are like that dodgy friend you could never quite trust, but was so much fun to be out on the piss with when you were in the right mood.

PS I smacked my first lip the other day… on my Mako Mutant—SMACK! it went, in a wet, sloppy, sort of way. I see the attraction finally.

Really good waves are like a slick, smooth in between with glass ramps to play on. Lots of waves are not that good though :(

Kitesurfing in waves is so dynamic, you are always moving, always searching, and always getting into waves early leaving plenty of time to set up. As mentioned before, no duck diving, no long paddle outs, not waiting around, just constant moving around, jumping, riding, carving etc. I wish I started kiting 20 years ago with the equipment we have now!
This is yesterdays session....with three other people out in a ten kilometer stretch of coast....

Flats are great until....
you time the kite across the window and carve a breaking wave
Be aware that... you can't do it the first time
and the wave breaks you

Then when you get that down,
try a backroll or big air off a breaking wave that LAUNCHES you like a force you have never felt
Experience the fine few microseconds between
a steep break and whitewash rolling you like a ragdoll...
only then will you understand

This! I very rarely get to ride a nice slick. I learned getting hammered by waves but now I am getting to where I can enjoy the ever changing play ground the ocean provides.
