Mako 165 in high wind?

Postby rocktor » Tue Jun 18, 2013 3:12 pm

How is the Ocean Rodeo Mako 165 in high winds? It is a huge board but also gas a nice rocker. I just picked up this board because of how well it handles chop but wondering if i should get a smaller mako for winds 20-25 kts. I weigh 185 lbs. Any mako riders with some input?

Can't speak to the 165 in that I have never ridden one. I have a 150 and love it. I am 175 and use it with my 6m in 25+. Great board. Not sure if this helps...

I think that you will find that all Makos handle high winds very well.

With that being said, if you can demo a Mako 135 or a Mako 130 for winds of 25+, you will likely have a silly grin on your face after trying.

Hope that this helps.

I'm 165 lbs and have been riding the Mako 140 and Mako king for 3+ years now. You can ride the Mako King comfortably in higher wind than other lightwind boards like doors, but if it's over 18 knots, you'd have more fun on a smaller board, especially if you are doing any kind of jumping or tricks. The King lands much softer than the door boards I have tried, but it's still a big board.

I haven't tried the 135 or 130 makos, but I don't think you would need to go smaller than the 140 at your weight. For me, there is no top end for my 140. It rides like a smaller board because of all the rocker and concave.

I weigh about 180 and ride my king in high wind, low wind, any kind of wind, and it works fine. I've had it out in 35 mph gusting to 45 or so. I doubt if it's the ideal board for the extremes, but it works for me. I used to ride the 140, but dropped it when I got the king.

I'm 180 lbs and used a 140 for 3 years as my main board..... I also got a King (165), this was great in hi gusty winds , the longer edge let you carve up to push the kite forward and get control, great fun.
Now I have a 150 for fun on bumpy days and wavey downwinders, my main board is a Raptor Pro Ltd, a very different ride but one which ticks the boxes I now want.

Hey windy brit we must live in parralell universe. Same, had 140/king, now a 150 and have a laluz but my bro (my mian kiting buddy) has come off his 140 now on the raptor ltd 136 (which I ride a lot as well) and I have a 132 demo brand new sitting in my shed right now waiting on some wind to test out. We should share notes my man.

I want to join in on your parallel universe. I have been thinking of going to 150 mako plus a smaller regular twin tip instead of the 140/king combo, but I've never tried a 150. What do you like better about the 150?

Since I started riding raceboards, the King hasn't gotten nearly as much attention.

Raptor Pro LTD is at top of my list for small twin tip. :o weird...
