Paging Dr Toby, nose line length on Dyno 18m??

Postby Puetz » Fri Jun 21, 2013 8:12 am

Paging Dr Toby,

I was checking my beloved 18m Dyno and found a knot in the 5th line so I went to check the length and measured 460 cm which is fine but then I saw the little tag and it had printed on it, "5th line 470 cm". Hmmmm, is this right so I checked another 18m and it too had a 460 cm line attached and it too had "470 cm" printed tag????

So my question is, can you check your 5th line and see its length, what's printed on it and what is its actual measurement?

Much appriceiated,

Robbie :D

... thanks Toby :thumb:

Any one else with an 18m, could you also check please???

I did a quick-ish search around the net and couldn't find any info of which measurment is correct. Dunno why after all this time, 2 years, I only discover it now. I noticed that my 2012 Dyno 17m gets a slack 5th line now and then but 18m doesn't and maybe the reason is that its been short all this time and also why the kite is so stable.

Anyway, thanks again!

Robbie :D

Manuals are not just meant for a backup when you run out of toilet paper.

... I must have a different manual but mine doesn't say, and the downloadable one on North website doesn't show it either. Maybe I've had too many beers but I don't see it! :o

Line tag says 4,70

Meassured it and it has 4,65. I meassured from the fronttube, not where the line is connected to the eye.

... hmmm interesting! I too measured from the front tube, and I still got 460cm on 2 different kites.

I went for a kite yesterday with an added 10cm on the nose line. The kite felt slightly softer and almost as if it had better top end. It was hard for me to pin down the differences but in my head it was ever so slightly better,,,, but then again it might have been all in my mind and psycologically convinced myself that, now the measurement matched the tag,,, must be better :o

I'll try again today and see if I can work out if I have fixed or f'd it.

I want to find out for sure what the designer intended, so please if anyone else can measure theirs that would be fantastic.

Just a thought, but Toby if you have a new 18m, could you measure that one too?? A crazy thought just entered my mind, has a 2 year old well used line shrunk,,, dare I say it,,, is it possible??? Maybe I've had too many Heinikens?

cheers for now,

Robbie :bye:

It was from the 2012 bar manual. The 5th line is a component of the bar not the kite, correct? I never used a North but I usually go to the manual first. So what I found was what I thought the real answer should be. How long should the 5th line be. Thats what is in 6.1.3. Who cares what a label says. If I tuned my bar based on what the label on the line says the line should be, my bar would be out of tune.

Good luck.

... thanks Krazedkiter, but I'd say not being familiar with North kites you don't understand the bit I'm asking,,, yes the 5th line is part of the bar,,, but,,,, the "nose line" is part of the kite, and its the line you connect the 5th line too, when rigging up.

With loaded 5th line kites such as Rebel, Vegas, Naish Torch etc etc, the nose line length makes a big difference in the kites performance and even the Dyno as I've discovered, dispite the fact that the Dyno can be used with 4 or 5 line bar (ie no 5th line at all). If the 5th line or the nose line is short, the nose is 'pulled' down, causing the trim to be out, therefore the performance characteristics are changed.

In my case, 10cm difference is a lot and besides, the tag saying 470cm and 2 different kites measuring 460 cm, I want to know which is correct. Maybe its been wrong all this time and I might get just that little bit better performace out of the kite.

cheers for now,

Robbie :D
