Postby Puetz » Mon Jun 24, 2013 10:06 am

Hello all,

does anyone know the projected area of an Ozone 19m Edge?

Thanks for your time,

Robbie :D

No one really is really telling ..... but the day ain't over yet

If a Speed3 19m has 16.2m2 projected...
....and the Dyno 2013 17m (which i heard is actually 17.8 flat size) has 13.0m2 projected area
....then it is probably somewhere between 13.5 and 14m2 projected

My wild guess :D

What one could also wonder is how, and even if, the projected area is meassured.
Eg for the Dyno example actual/projected area stated (by coincidence?) fits almost exactly a very old suggestion I just googled saying that 1.36 is a good approximation of the ratio.
http://www.kitemare.com/Kitesurfing%20Kites.htm

So. Is the projected area just a fixed fraction of the flat area when stated or is it somehow meassured?
(The Speed3 is extremely flat and obviously has a lower ratio justbylooking at it in the sky.)

... sounds like a good guess Supa!

I would expect that with the age of computers and CAD programs now, it wouldn't be too hard to work it out and let people know. If Ozone don't want people to know, well then thats cool too but I would like to know.

The reason why I wanted to know is I found the 19m doesn't quite have the same static power as my 18m Dyno and it got me thinking if it had something to do with the projected area. I know 18m and 19m flat are fairly similar but maybe it does??

Anyway, just wondering is all!

cheers,

Robbie :D

Reckon aspect has got more to do with it. Just guessing though.

Whatever the Aspect is we may never know. I was told by Ozone that the 19 was built to park and pull unlike the sizes below. Maybe you need a hair more board speed than w the Dyno to go but would imagine the power is much greater than the Dyno 18. Lots of good reports on the Aus site. Would love to ride the 19 Edge. May get a chance soon.

... the 19m Edge definetely has speed and quicker turning than the 18m, also bar pressure is less on the 19m but I felt the 18m had more static power when going slowish. I should try on my Sector and compare the 2 and see how that goes. Top end is better to on the Edge too but the biggest thing is the Edge is much more soft feel. If I push the Edge, it folds on me.

We checked the aspect of the 2 and they are fairly similar but this was only while the 2 were flying and we stood next to each other. A while ago we compared the 17m Edge (among other kites too, Naish Fly, Dyno 16m, Core 17m to name a few) to the Dyno 18m and it was same width in the middle but the Dyno was longer, ie longer LE, so in theory the Dyno was slightly higher aspect. Haven't compared the 19m to the 18m on the ground yet so not sure.

I know static power isn't the be all and end all of a kites performance but I like my power and I need it to be stable too. If you haven't felt a folding kite (LE bends/folds/buckles under load) then you won't understand why its so important to me.

Anyway, I digress again! Anyone know then what the projected area of a Core XR2 or XR3 19m?

cheers,

Robbie :D

interesting robbie...From the time I spent on Tony's Dyno in bali I would agree the dyno's do have more static grunt and a heavier feel. I ride my edge on the middle setting and have even considered going to the heaviest as it has a very very light feel. But that effortless flying is the thing I like best about it.

All I can compare lately is the edge versus the zephyr and the zephyr has that static grunt you talk about, hence why I considered it an aspect thing. But as you said you feel the dyno is a higher aspect. Didn't feel it when I rode it compared to the edge. Weird.

Maybe the core, lower aspect kite, might give you that grunt/static pull you are looking for.

The folding is from Under inflating. I have a friend who weighs 260 Pies (American Pies) who flies the 17 Edge and says when he inflates to 9 PSI or above there is no folding. I don't know becauses I have not flown the Edge. Hope 2 soon.
