Building a single center line flag bar using parts I have

Postby Laughingman » Fri Jul 05, 2013 6:58 pm

So I just ran into a bit of a challenge, wonder if anyone who has experience with building bars has some advice.

The challenge is to tie the depower rope which goes through the bar to the chickenloop to the bottom of the pull/pull depower strap... I figured there would be a d-ring here but not in this case... any ideas?

why the mystery, tie the same knot you would have done to the loop that is there instead of the ring you expected to see, :o :o :o :o
A bowline would suffice :!:
I`m amazed at some of the questions that get asked on here and other kite forums sometimes,
some of you should not be kiting if you can`t work this stuff out :angryfire: :angryfire: :angryfire:

Rethink, thanks for your response.

I am familiar with the knots required to tie rope to a steel ring but this strapping is sewn flat so my fear is that the strap edges could wear through the rope or vise versa.

As far as the questions which you are amazed about... remember the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked. What would be the point of the forum if everybody already knew everything? I have never tied rope to strapping before and this working is the difference between being safe or not.... what harm is done in asking?

Obviously if there was no forum to use as a resource I would make that same choice but maybe, just maybe, there is someone out there that may know a bit more then you or I?

So if anyone else wants to lecture me for not trusting the obvious answer save your breath.

Some peoples kids!

Laughingman I apologise for my initial comment,
A locking carabiner would provide a temporary solution if wear of the loop or rope is a concern.

Laughingman: I see your concern with attaching rope to webbing. I think that since it's a static connection (the rope is not sliding through the webbing), it shouldn't be a problem. My 0.02, could be wrong.

If you're really concerned, consider wrapping the cord in some tubular webbing, or some type of extra sheath to protect the cord where it connects to the webbing.

A bowline through the webbing will be fine. Naish and many others used this way for years, you could use a small section of tuning through the webbing.

But if u are trying to do a mini 5th line just attach it to the top of the depower strap whwrebthere is a ring.

Sorry just reread your post, bowline is the knot you need to use, through the webbing will be fine.

opps I just tied a "figure 8 follow through" before I say the last few posts... my reasoning was that if I could get the pull away from the webbing it may provide an even pull on both sides of the webbing loop... anyone think this is a bad idea?

Laughinman,
The figure 8 is fine but it will be difficult to untie after hard loading. I use a double bowline to tie-in for climbing when I know I'll be taking lots of falls. I don't think it'll load the webbing unevenly. My old Cab bars are assembled just this way, with a spectra depower line through webbing. I agree you can upgrade with a little piece of hardware store tubing to sleeve the webbing pass-through if you like.

I'm looking forward to seeing your finished single flag assembly. I should convert some older bars too-
