Board and Kite size for 101kg beginner in Thailand

Postby matt_81a » Thu Jul 11, 2013 7:40 pm

Hello everybody. I am new to the forum and new to kitesurfing. I have been flying a HQ hydra trainer kite now for a while and I'll be heading to Thailand (Hua Hin) for 2 months mid September. I will take a kitesurfing course there, however I want to buy my equipment over here as the price difference is considerable.
I am 6'0" tall and weigh 224pounds (101kg).
I was wondering if my choice of equipment is right in your opinion:

2012 Best Kahoona 13.5m - I can get this new for a great price
Axis Inferno 152 x 46 (or similar) board

As well for the golf bag, what are the opinions:
Dakine SX (155 x 52 x 22cm) or Crazyfly golf bag (155 x 52cm x 25cm).

Any advice will be really appreciated.

Cheers,

Matt

I'm 6'4 and 221 lbs. I use a 144x46 for lighter winds and a 136x41 the rest of time. Also a cab skillet for strapless.Your board /kite choice is dependent on your ability. You'll get more efficient as time goes on. You'll do fine with those choices, more important to get as much time on the water.

... the Kahoona is a fine kite but as you get more experienced you'll find at your weight, it will deform and give you the sh!ts.

What will happen is you'll learn to edge harder and the harder you edge and put pressure on the kite, it will start to deform and loose performance. Then you'll wish you had a more stable kite under all conditions and from what I found, bridle kites are not really going to do it for you.

From the kites I've tried, North Rebel remain stable in all but the most extreme conditions and importantly, steering/upwind and feel won't change. I tried the Naish Fly and Draft, 2 good light wind kites but when I started to kite with a bit more aggression, they deform but worse, the steering characteristics and kite feel changed. When a few lighter guys tried it, they didn't get the same results so I figured, the kites just don't suit the heavier guy.

Your boards are good size and as you get more experince you'll want a smaller board. I use a 138 x 43 as my high wind TT. I can use a smaller board easily but the little extra width gets me through the lulls but if the wind picks up, I just edge harder so the extra width isn't a problem.

Keep having fun, good luck.

cheers,

Robbie! :D

the season in Hua Hin starts in october so not too sure how the wind will be before, at you weight a larger kite and board is a good idea for hua hin because the wind somedays wont be quite enough and a bigger kit means you will have more chance to get out, especially as you are learning. i dont know how good a deal you're getting on the best kahoona, but, you will be able to pick up good deals from the shops there on 2013 kites as the 2014s will be coming into stock, they also have 2010, 11, 12 old stock which you could pick up even cheaper. you will also find golf bags, harness's so you might save the hassle of lugging all gear way to hua hin and buy some when you get there or know a bit more about kites and kiting.

As far as I know, September is low season for Hua Hin. Season starts in October. I am 73kg and 178. I have 10 & 14 Switcblades. 140 Spectrum. These two pretty cover Thailand conditions. Wind gets really low sometimes. For me the best season in Hua Hin is february-april. There are 4 stores that I know. North, Slingshot, Cabrinha and Airush dealers. Out of those the bighest inventory is held by Cabrinha and Airush dealer which is KBA (Kiteboarding Asia). Beside cab and airush they sell North and Slingshot. They have also good deals on previous model kites.

I believe that the kite itself is a really good price - complete with bar and lines , brand new 2012 model - 600 Euro - roughly $800.
I've been reading as well about the wind situation and indeed it seems that September is not the perfect month to go. On the other hand, I am going to Thailand anyways and would like to use the chance to learn kitesurfing. I'll be staying in Thailand for 1 month first and then head to Bali for probably another month. Eventually some more time after that in Thailand. I know - lots of time - the perks of working on a ship; long vacation afterwards :)
Another reason for buying the equipment here (in Italy at the moment) is that I'll be starting out my lessons over here and then continue in Asia. I agree with not having to lug the luggage halfway around the world, but luckily my company pays the plane ticket and luggage fees :)
Thanks for the useful advice and I'll be checking as well with the local shop to see what else they offer.

Hi matt. I am a kitesurfing instructor at kiteboardingasia and have been teaching in thailand for the last few years.
In september if you plan on kitesurfing you will need to make your way to Nai yang beach phuket or Koh Samui or Koh Phangan as they are the only spots that have good wind this time of year. (Expect rain and bring a thin raincoat)

About the kahoona kite i dont think you will make a considerable saving on the kite. As the 2012 kites are now much cheaper.

If you have any questions just ask

Hey Matt, +1 for samui... much better than hua hin at this time of year.. Hua hin will basically be off until the NE season starts - november some years. kiteboarding asia also in koh samui and koh phangan.. this would be your best options.
