How do you remove a pad from a surfboard ?

Hi, I have tried with a razor blade but this is going to take hours and there is plenty of glue remaining on the deck. I read some are doing it with a hairdryer but some say it's bad for the board ... So do you know of a quick & safe way to do that ?

Hello romkite.
The razor is a good way but use some "GOOF OFF" at the same time while you are pulling your pad out. But then once you are done rinse your board.

Coleman camp fuel works like a charm. You can pick some at Walmart. Since it evaporates quickly, lay a rag on top of the glue to be removed and pour it directly on the rag so it's soaked. Let it sit for about 10 minutes(until the glue softens). It should then peel off with a little effort.

For those who might be interested, wikipedia says the generic name for coleman camp fuel is "white gas". This is a product we can find anywhere in the world, called "Essence F" in France for example, and which is indeed recommended for that kind of task. Yes, there are people living with no walmart and outside the US boarders

I'll give it a try on monday and will let you know how it worked out.

First try ordinary paint thinner or (Varsol). It might work if your pad is not well attached and it is the least harmful. It is great for removing board wax too.

White gas (or Coleman fuel) is stronger and can work better.

Goof Off is amazing and it will certainly work but it may dull the shiny finish of your board and remove some paints.

Toluene is the solvent really needed to dissolve contact cement and it is available at paint stores. But it will probably dull the surface of your board and dissolve many paints.

Hi, I could put my hands on some white gas this morning and I do confirm it does the job pretty well !
Here is hte procedure I would advise:

step 1: remove the pad using a long flexible knife (like the ones we use for ham). Don't waist your time trying to remove all the pad's foam, just be careful not to cut the board...
step 2: pour some white gas all over the remaining material, and after say 2 minutes, rub it all with some old rag soaked with white gas.

All in all it shall take about 15 minutes !

How do you put the flames out before it melts the top deck? I used some sand but it made a mess!
