Anyone here not use a donkey dick at all ?

Postby Gioro_T » Sat Jul 20, 2013 12:57 pm

So yeah ... who rides solely on the loop ?
And what are the advantages of it ?

.... reason I'm asking is because I got this bar and it is missing the donkey dick (or "locking pin", if you will), so I figured I'll try riding without it and if I can't cope or I get too frustrated I'll install one from a spare bar or something.

Depends. If I was unhooking all the time don't reckon I'd have one. But I ride hooked in high aspect kites that will rip your arms off if loaded up with immense apparent wind if i come unhooked.

A c kite that gives slack in the lines after pop...and I was unhooking and doing all that wake style powered stuff not sure I'd have one actually.

the only times it really makes a difference are when your lines go slack, so that is:

- launching and landing
- riding toward your kite

just keep a hand on your loop while you're launching and landing to keep it in your harness and you'll be fine

most kiters that unhook take the donkey dick off since it gets in the way

I ride slingshot and removing the donkey is the first thing I do with a new kite. If your just learning then you might want to use one. You can inadvertently unhook which could be very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. I find not having one is only a problem when I'm in waves trying to relaunch a kite. Hard to stay hooked in while getting tossed about in the waves.

On the other hand I think it is safer to not use one. I believe it is better to get the bar as far away from you in a bad crash so you don't make things worse by steering the kite or looping it.

Good times; thanks for the advice, guys !
I was thinking that it won't be a big deal; besides, if I hook my leash in suicide than I can quickly pull the bar back to me if it pops off.

And -yeah- it's a C kite, so ever better, right ?

"just keep a hand on your loop while you're launching and landing to keep it in your harness and you'll be fine" -> will do !

"On the other hand I think it is safer to not use one. I believe it is better to get the bar as far away from you in a bad crash so you don't make things worse by steering the kite or looping it"
--> good point, haven't thought about this before.

"But I ride hooked in high aspect kites that will rip your arms off if loaded up with immense apparent wind if i come unhooked. " --> Hah'Ha I hear ya' ! I have one just as you describe. 17m Speed1

PS: no, it's not a survey. I call it "keeper tube" or "locking pin" if I show the bar to someone new to kiting. Thought "donkey dick" was the norn among kiters Hah'HA !!

You can make one from tubing purchased at a building or home supply store. It can be secured to the spreader bar rather than the chicken loop.

Old c kites are a pain to relaunch it sucks when you swim like crazy or pull in a few meters of line to get the kite to relaunch it rolls on its back and then you can't find the bar because no donkey dick

pretty much never use it.

Used to take it right off, but its a pain to find again when its time to sell, so now it just stays as a useless appendage.
