Handle passes too dangerous long-term for shoulders?

Postby kookfest » Sat Jul 20, 2013 10:49 pm

It seems like all pro riders eventually get serious shoulder injuries: Ruben, Bertrand F, Jeremy Flores, Adam Ratajewski, Youri Zoon, Aaron Jarman, Andy Yates, etc.

Handle passes are great to do and awesome to watch, but his the cost too high?

Maybe it's the nature of this sport: 999 times out of 1000 you can get away with it, but 1 in 1000 go bad - really BAD.

My shoulders are playing up because of handle passes. Thinking about going full time into surf style.

If you do the right exercises to prevent it, you shouldn't get hurt. These are great ex:

It's also very comon to get injured due to lack of resting. Especially pros are not resting enough. This wears down the body and really increases the risk of injuries. Check this out:

It's not the handle passes that hurt the shoulders. It is holding on when crashing that puts all the stress on the shoulders. I had arthritis surgery last year and the only time my shoulders bother me is when I hold on during a crash. I never even have pain after wakeboarding.

Best thing to do is all ways let go in a crash.

Yes TheJoe is right most of the injuries happens when you try to hold on to the bar when crashing. So if something goes wrong let your bar go. But again once you reach 45 years old you will still feel the pain after kiting so many years doing so many unhook moves. This is why I choose my battles and do unhook moves when I need to.

My weak shoulders don't just keep me from handle passes but makes all unhooked riding a true pain. It's the force upwards, even when I keep my albows low that makes both my shoulders hurt. I can't even use below bar depower cause I can't project enough force with my arm in that angle.
E.g. triceps push down at the gym is an exercise that is extremely painfull for my shoulders. Anyone else experiencing similar pain or knowing how to exercise it away?
I would appreciate some help A LOT cause it limits my riding so much :(

If you do any repetitive movement for a long enough period of time then it will take its toll on the body. Regardless of how good of shape you are in.

Yeah, check out the exercise I linked above. If any, those will give you the most stable shoulder and that's the key element here. Strength is secondary...

Do what I did and go see an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in sports medicine. I had the same problem and it was arthritis. Life is so much better now that I have taken care of the problem.

By the way it was not kiting that ruined my shoulders it was heavy lifting at the gym.
