Kiting is happening on the Isla. There were several tour boat operators (instigators in this) that were shocked when the port captain started enforcing compliance with all Mexican maritime regulations and sending them back to port with their loads of tourists when no proper permits, life jackets etc. could be produced. The port captain is a kite friendly fellow with a sense of humor. He told the operators that if they want the rules enforced this must apply to everyone. So, if you are an experienced kiter all is good, just make sure you get the low down (Holbox Kite School at Casa Tortugas) on protected areas/no kite zones and please respect them. Students? Teaching is available. Mid November is when the winds start becoming consistent and is a great time of year to enjoy the area.
It should be noted that all the "rules" for kiting are currently enforced by the kiting community as many places are. The police were used when there when the dispute was looking to get dangerous, they were very friendly and quite interested in the gear and kiting.

Many thanks Saildawg. We are all (5 kiters) responsible experienced PFD wearers ..... I think if we're sensible we should be fine.

Saildawg...... looking at map of Holbox it seems the main kiting area is Punta Mosquito ? it looks like its a couple of km at least up the beach at least from town ...... I'm not allergic to walking but
are there water taxis/golf carts ??? TIA

Understood. On vacation and looking for maximum kite time and enough energy for cervesas and fun after. Boats are available, I would recommend asking for Davide at Tribu Hostel or Patrick or Gabo at Casa Tortugas for boats. Davide arranges boats for kiting and kayaking regularly, Patrick and Gabo have a boat. I walk with my gear from the east side of town, before the hotels, to Puenta Mosquito and Playa Ensenada in 45 minutes.
Maybe I shouldn't be talking up this place though, you might crowd my beach!

Hi,

The last we heard in April/May 2013 was that there was limited teaching, but kiting was happening on the main beach and Playa ensenada. Things will have settled down by November, so hopefully this will continue.

November is Norte wind season, so the best place to kite is the main beach when the strong north winds hit. The harbour is generally closed to small watercraft as it's abut 25 knots and small waves. Your best bet is to stay in touch with Casa de las Tortugas, as one of the managers there is a very keen kiter, so should be able to provide some up to date info.

If not try kiting at Isla Blanca - 20min from Cancun.
