Surely it can keep up with a HG in thermal conditions (it handles gusts remarkably); goggles FPV would help if the copter pilot is grounded.
Whilst cliff soaring should equally be workable provided wind < 16 knots, perhaps even 20 knots.
However, there is this guy jimovo (look on the first page of this thread) who is working on a most interesting idea (to be closely followed!): make the copter track a target equipped with GPS and and transmitter. I imagine it will be user set-able so it can fly in the desired position relative to the target - ie you. The great thing is that you wouldn't even need a guy on the ground. As they are, these GPS equipped copters (such a mine) self land at precisely the take-off point (home) when the batteries run down or when contact is lost.
I am sure you're gonna get one pretty soon!

Your phantom is all stock, no gimbal?

Stock, no gimbal.
Since I will concentrate on picture more than movies, gimbal not really required. It's weight would shorten flights.
Within a few months and with more experience, I will certainly consider a larger copter (6 or 8 motors) with all the bells and whistles (gimbal, FPV goggles or monitor, DSLR...etc...), But I wouldn't able to take that gear along in travels, since it would weigh as much as 2 kites at least. The Phantom with its box is about 3 kg.

This was a first on a Bali volcano lake at 1200 m altitude. The rider, Maximus, was kiting on the Ocean late afternoon at sunset the same day.

Sorry to be off topic, but felt like posting this as well. Regatta Day in Gilimanuk.

Yes, lots, but too lazy to edit them. Waiting for Max (the guy you see in the pics) to do the tedious job...
The pictures are captions from videos, by-the-way...
I ordered a F550 hexacopter (not sure it was the best choice), so I can carry more weight (gimbal, fpv transmitter..) without being too penalised with flight time.
I'll try to post something short, however, and here, in the meanwhile, a couple more captions (sorry, not all kite related):

we filmed the other day with a drone...not that easy if you don't have the glasses to fly it.
They will make it much easier if you see what you film ;-)

Unfortunately not much wind...but next week more wind will come back to Cumbuco...
trying to get my new tricks onto drone video ;-)

That drone we use can fly in 20+ knots of winds!

This teaser to a drone kitemovie (The Aerial Eye) is shot in 18 knt. 25 knt is not fun. You can still fly upwind but it is scary when a gust come.

The footage is not top dollar because we had the sun against us.

I am going to shoot Toby and we will get early up for right light.
