Any tips on slipping clamcleat?

Postby Hawaiis » Fri Aug 09, 2013 9:52 am

The clamcleat depower line on my 2013 Ozone Race Bar started to slip after 6 month. Anyone has tips on solution s short of replacing the cleat or line?
Would surf wax on the line make it worst?

Change the depower line, use same line quality, diameter and lenght.

Have you looked at the clam cleat teeth ?

Are they worn ?

Because, I know some that goes out riding, without dipping the cleat in the water (and it has to be EVERY time you go out, if a sandy beach) - and this can destroy a good cleat in a few sessions.

Sand will EAT the teeth really fast so they are worth nothing, and the line will slip :o

I've NEVER had a cleat that got worn, not even after many years, since I've just dipped my cleat in the water whenever I go out :thumb:

Many years ago, when cleats started being used, we destroyed the cleats really really fast, because we did not rinse for sand :(
And no, it was not the cleat quality that lacked, as the very same cleats, when new, hold up "forever" when just taking care, as we learned the hard way at first...

Takes a few seconds only, to dip the cleat in the water (just fly the kite down low and easy to do when going out), and you are good to go.

I've never had a depower rope that got "slippery" - only worn so it actually sticks even better in the cleat (but eventually has to be changed if frayed too much), so I think it could be your cleat that is "wasted" and useless ?

Take a close look, maybe with a magnifier glass, and compare to a new one if in doubt - is my advice :D

I noticed the line is thicker at places where it meets the clamcleat. So the line might need replacing. Mahalo

Very good advice. I notice the clamcleat is worn out probably 20%, I will replace and try dipping from now on. Mahalo

Also some kinds of line stick in the cleat better. You might check the paraloc lines as I think both Amsteel and Ozones Beall line are more slippery.

The advice of dipping the depower / bar system in seawater at start of each session is very good advice.

I have heard endless complaints about North depowerlines breaking where they pass the bar after half a year or whatever - they hold for a very long time if you just get rid of the sand and let water lubricate the system. OK, heavier riders may wear the lines faster, but anyway - sand is not good.

All good advice, I could only add that it is a bad habit sliding the rope through the teeth on the way down instead of taking it out completely out of cleat. Bad for the rope and the cleat.

Update:
Changed the clamcleat and works just like new.
Visually very hard to tell it is worn.

Lets back up a bit ; before you even Get to the water to ride.

A "DRY" cord , really can't be totally trusted to hold in the cleat, even for the launch ; &
you Need to cleat it down to go full De-powered.

I Always Wet the cord with my water-bottle as part of my set-up , and Set the cord in the
clamcleat with a bunch of pressure with my hands .

Sand will now stick even Better to the wet cord, making Peter's advise even more critical
when Ya enter the water, (wash the sand off before Ya go kiting).

I started doing that when a rider's kite went Full-power because his cord slipped
in the clamcleat on take-off while he was doing a self-tether launch .
It was Blowing, it was Ugly ; he had to retrieve his kite from the trees ! :(

I'm usually the last one in the water because i'm screwing with my legs, so when
i'm doing a self tether-launch , i gotta be Really careful ; i'm not as Agile as you guys !

You are right Bille :thumb:

But it can be solved much easier:

When you return from a session, you always go ashore with the kite depowered, right ?

So any bar you got IS in the depowered state, when you launch the next time :naughty:

So when you walk out in the water, and dip the cleat/depowerline - the first thing you'll do after that is to slip the depower out to more power, to ride - thus you get any remaining sand away in the same move when it is all wet - problem solved
Or you slip the power up while you dip it in the water - even better of course, but a bit overkill IMO.

Of course the depower COULD slip and go to full power, but IMO not a problem, as you have the wrong kitesize if thats a problem, so should never be an issue - and if, you just pull the depower again
