When the wind's gusty, you might go up really nicely then suddenly get dropped cos the gust has died . . . you can redirect all you like, but you're still coming down hard. Rather than slam all my weight on my board and knees, like I've jumped off the roof of the house, I'll splash-down on my bum.

Only get knocked around when I drop down in the surf, get nailed by the waves . . .
When being dropped. Let the bar put all the way. And drop faster!. Redirect obviously. Then just before landing pull the bar in hard. Soft landing.

Works sometimes, if you've got the time or height to get onto it. No harm in just splashing down if you're feeling lazy :D

I am 56 (almost 57) and have been kiting for years. I used to windsurf prior to kiting.

I love big air and carving on small waves. No real limitations due to age. I just stay in shape and kite as often as I can.

I hit the weights twice per week. Just the basic compound movements: bench-press, pullups (weighted), squats, dead-lift, rowing, and press. Very quick workout. Usually just one set to failure.

One of the really COOL things about this sport is that just being out
on the water and riding, while taking in the view, is WAY more than enough
to justify the energy Ya put into learning how to kite-board !!!

You don't Need tricks , to be having Fun .

Your instructor will tell Ya how to bail-out of a Bad situation , before it actually
dangerous enough to hurt you. Like if your speed gets too high you can always
smash the kite in the water, it's like hitting the breaks on your car. If you do it
once, next time you'll be checking your speed by bringing the kite "Up" out of the
power-zone, "before" it gets scarey fast .

Flying the kite :
If you do everything Smooth and deliberate, with No radical input ; you shouldn't
need to worry much about going airborne . Just stay away from the higher winds
and gusty conditions.

Also, that Quick-Release is an option you Should be practicing .

also, having a board that is forgiving in the chop, keeping knees loose (think mogul skiier), kite with lighter bar pressure, skipping wake style tricks will keep you on the water longer with fewer issues.

Will be 54 soon. When I started kiting 12 years ago got the same comments.
But its quite clear that kitesurfing is the new Golf.

Been thinking of getting a strapless hydrofoil to keep things spicy.
