I am not sure how it works but a monk will allow you the maximum control at the highest speed, while maintaining edge bite. All these factors add up to getting the most from the rider and the kite. I am not saying other boards are useless at this, its just that I haven't found one better yet.
So what is the best type of TT if you want to boost to the moon in the waves.
I still want to ride some waves and need to ride through chop nicely. Some waves will be big so i need a board that is stable on the wave face.
But the primary objective is to ride as fast as possible toward the wave and boosts as long and high as possible.
I'm not a freestyler so a little lightboard for tricks is not required. But a do enjoy an epic storm session with insane wind and see conditions. So i want to be riding aggresively in those conditions.
What are your thoughts?
Ask Mark Shinn. He will have the right answer for you. He is also a wave specialist.
There is always the fine balance between
1. keeping your knees healthy
and
2. the massive pop from a stiff board.
I prefer the first option (and the Shinn Monk is doing the perfect job for me)...
What the Monk does is allows you to accelerate really quickly in the worst possible conditions – it really does go through chop with impunity. It also holds an edge like no other board I have tried AND it lets you release this edge very crisply.
So yes technique is really important, but the Monk lets you really focus on this i.e. speed, loading and release at optimum levels of power. You are not always ‘hunting’ out the perfect kicker to get the speed and control you want and almost every kicker with short or long periods, smooth or choppy water between becomes a potential ramp!
However – Plummet from reading your posts you seem to get better formed ‘proper’ ramps than most and for this I’d consider the Speedball. I own both and when we get wind blown waves then I like the Speedball as it is sooooo smooth plus you can do the land on another wave and hard carve out that you love.
The Monk will work just as well, but for where I live I like the Monk is for when it is messy it just blast right through and let you attack the conditions with absolute confidence.
Monk... not a windy enough day... as I could still unhook!
Shinn Monk Forever is great at doing exactly what you want! And is is also the most confortable TT I have tried, no pain to my knees anymore with this board. I have the 2013 version.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but marks board of choice in the super shinn, but of course now comes along the ultrasonic (looking forward to your observations this Sunday boys in Scotland).
A stiff board with rocker is the go. I don't like the lack of feedback on the monk, reckon I prefer the SS.
I have been really enjoying the 2013 laluz which they have made progressively stiffer through the core. Enough rocker for comfort, but the carbon under the heel makes the centre of the board stiff that give progressive feedback as you load.
That being said that ultrasonic looks fucking something !!
i thought with that wave as your kicker the board wouldn't matter I always figured the pop is in the wave not your board. Clearly I need to go out and demo a shinn monk . . . find out what everyone is raving about.
