(Making a Bar) Whats the Length of Ozone throw?

Postby flybykite » Wed Sep 25, 2013 2:37 am

I'm hoping that someone will know the answer to this. I'm building a bar from lots of parts I've collected and I'm ready to cut the Amsteel line and rig it up but I dont know the length. I'm riding Ozone Edges.
If you can tell me the complete throw length of the ozone setup, I will be able to figure out the rest.
Just remembered that Ozone does not use a cleat so just the full length of throw is all.
I've been using a switch bar for the last 6 months but I seem to remember the throw was a bit longer.
Thanks

just curious, why do you want it exact? It does no harm to have a longer throw than the kite can use, all that happens is past a certain point the kite no longer depowers it just gives you some more slack in the back lines. A longer throw is useful if you want to use the bar with your other kites. Just make sure the leaders and chicken line match up so it takes equal line lengths when you are finished.

I prefer to set this up just as Ozone would. Not sure I want too much depower fully sheeted out, yes creating slack and possibly losing that hover moment when I drop the bar unhooked. I Dont unhook much on the edge anyhow but will more on the C4.

it will be fine with a longer throw, try it you'll see. You can always shorten it easily by cutting it, but you can't lengthen it.

Well, I'm sure you are correct but I'm also adding a sheath to the power line and it will not slip through the CL side meaning I would have to open the CL up to move the line. I really only get one shot at cutting and installing the plastic sheath unless I just go long. It would be nice to get it right the first time. Anyhow I'm working on this tonight if someone knows the throw length or could measure it. Thanks

If someone doesn't get at it I can give you this in about 6 hrs. Will measure.

It's the perfect throw for me. I have set my north bar to the ozone throw. Don't get too much throw learn to edge and ride a kite properly. You don't need all that some give.

Finished the bar :jump:
Mostly North components to keep the mating simple.

What I've done.
Used North 2011 CL & Bar, cleat, Stopper ball and depower handle.
Added North Microloop & Hook upgrade.
Used 4 mm Amsteel power line and pulled it through Teleflex Marine pilot tubing with an inside diameter of 3.6 mm (Semi hard plastic tubing) That was a PITA!
Filed the bar hole out and polished it to accommodate the new sheathed powerline. (Bar wouldn't spin properly before)
Added new Switch Bar line attachments.
Added Switch front line swivel.
Spliced 1.5 feet of 3 mm Amsteel back into the end of the depower line. (For better grab on the cleat. 4 mm was too small and I worried about it slipping)
Made a stopper ball out of 1/2" nylon stock
Made a front line leader from 4 mm Amsteel
Drilled out the bar stopper ball and drilled out the stopper ball lock to allow for the larger and stiffer powerline to operate in it.

Still waiting on the post office to deliver the Q-line.
I think I'll try to feed the Q-line (single front line flag out) through the bar and CL but not through the bar stopper. Ill go outside that.
I intend to power the flag front line with the nylon stopper ball.
It will have one small figure 8 or overhand knot at the nylon stopper. I imagine the knot will be 3 mm thick and should easily pass through the 5 mm hole in the CL when I release.
If that does not work flawlessly, then I'll go with my original plan of making a side leash mod on the CL.

Stoked!!! :jump: :jump:
I'll let you know how it works out.
I'm hoping to get 2 or 3 years or 500-600 sessions out of this setup before needing to replace anything. Seems bombproof anyway.

Agree fully with edt !

Most brands have (for my taste) too short throw - as it has been "popular" to make bars with shorter throw the last years

In order to satisfy those who can not reach that far

But if you can, like most men can, a longer throw is only an advantage IMO.

Personal preference though - but as said - easy to cut shorter, but you can not lengthen it :(

Hey thats a nice looking setup, bar throw is your best friend - as long as you use a stopper. I thought youd know that already considering your mods... Its great for letting the kite rollover more in light winds ...
