Best right-hand surf breaks for kiting?

Postby rowboat » Thu Oct 03, 2013 8:01 pm

A lot of the legendary kite/wave spots like Fiji, Peru, One-Eye are lefts. For regular-footers that often means getting blown off the shoulder and/or having to ride backside...

Where your favorite right-hand surf breaks for kiting?

I can think of:

San Carlos
Cabo Verde
Brazil has a lot of little rights...

where else?

What's wrong with riding backside?

A lot....

Looks geeky, feels bad, and not possible to transfer the same power, nor do aerials as good/tweaked :(

For the occasional "variation" so it is not the same over and over, changing to backside now and then is awesome, but IMO not good, when waves are the best

We always change side here, according to winddirection - I've heard of some who only rides on one side, thus they have to ride backside in opposite wind directions :(
Not good, nor practical IMO

I have an idea why this is, historically - but a slightly different topic I think.

That is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I am guessing you have never paddled surfed. There are plenty of guys killing it on their backside. Backside off the tops, backside airs, and cutbacks definitely do not look geeky. You can get a lot of power going back side to front side. Yeah always hated watching guys like Kelly Slater killing it at pipeline, it just looked so geeky. .

San Carlos has the perfect wind direction and great surface conditions but the wave's kinda of
on the mushy side IMO. You can SUP the wave in the morning but too soft for free surfing, at least the times I've been there. There are much better spots in Baja where you are able to surf and kite. With that said, it was a perfect place to learn how to ride waves with a kite.
Have to also agree with SSK. Nothing geeky at all with going backside whether your surfing or kiting. I've seen some pretty amazing things from riders going backside, surfing and kiting.

That's how i feel when occasionally trying to ride switch!

Search for vids of Sebastian Ribeiro and Guilly riding backside, nothing geeky about it.

Maybe in Denmark where you are riding swells not really top to bottom waves, riding switch makes sense. But where you are riding real waves, I think you are going to ride on your strong side. I have not been all around the world so things may be different, but where I have been people ride on their strong foot. I just do not know of many guys predominantly riding switch. I do know plenty of guys killing it on their backside. For sure they do not look geeky. I prefer riding on my strong side because you can carve the big bottom turn, but on you backside you have that hard turn of the top to the cutback. It is different, but not lesser.

Maybe not "world class" but many of the famous CA waves I can think of are rights.
Wadell, Arroyo Laguna...

Supertubos, Peniche, Portugal on N which translates to side off, perfect breaks - see ripcurl comp videos to see what I mean. that's a right hand break side off on N with perfect delays on the breaks, and not SW which is the other direction that works. now is a good time of the year for it also. good luck.
