Kite Foilboard CA Championship: winner- John Heineken!!

Postby KiteTheBay » Mon Oct 14, 2013 9:06 pm

The Kite Foilboard California State Championships wrapped up Sunday, Oct 13th. The victor, John Heineken, carries his racing authority into the foiling class.

The 20 racer fleet consisted of half local, half visiting foiling pros. Bryan Lake, was first finisher behind Heineken. French foilers, Rivaud and Rousseau 3rd and 4th overall.
Many impressive mid-fleet racers rounded out the attendance, proving that this "foil craze" now has a backbone. Competitors including legends Chip Wasson and Alex Aguera; young guns, Koch, Pasquali, Withington, and Modica are all foil-focused to go faster!

With 4 races run on each day, it was a super fun to watch the foilers battle it out among not only themselves, but oftentimes, against light air conditions. Many races at times endured windspeeds of less than 10mph, though few racers were forced down from their foiling trim. With this newfound foil focus, many riders are still in search of the proper kite-size/foil combo. In the light conditions of 10-15mph, one could spot a 9m and as big as a 16m size kite! And the range of foils being ridden is a nearly as broad. Overall, it's hard to imagine a kitesurfing race being held in such light air.

Congratulations to the St Francis Yacht Club for holding the first ever foiling regatta! Can't wait to see (and race) the next one!

I'd say those are fin covers on the three fins of a raceboard.
