Ok,

so my oven is too small for this project. The plastic should go in the oven on 150C.

Another way to heat it is with a heat gun which I do not have. Bigger oven or a gun, that is a question.

Or, I can do this without the vac:

This is only for making a mold. However, the above method has a potential as a final finish.
Will see...

Got the rubber sheet 1x1m 0.25mm today. This might be a go! Good times:)

A bit busy at work this days...Got the better idea instead of vacuuming the whole plastic sheet.

Basically, look at how sport (baseball?) hats are made: 6 peaces of fabric stitched together. Maybe to cut 6 peaces of plastic just as for a hat, and than heat it as per above to get a perfect mold.

I might try that....

Finally got myself a heat gun and tried the above "hat" method. Didn't work as PETG plastic doesn't really stick to itself fast enough not to burn it.

Also tried this ( link posted before as well):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFEvctCEYq8

The problem again is a petg plastic. Impossible to stretch so much like in this plastic barrel. Which is interesting since, as you can see at the above photo, a vacuum did work but wasn't perfect coz of escaped heat.

But now I do have a method to heat a plastic and than use it on a vac table. Basically using the same barrel with a plastic as on the above youtube example, but heating from below with a heat gun through a hole.
Than placing upside down the barrel on a vac table might work. Will try that soon.

This eliminates a need for big heat oven. It might also keep the plastic hot enough while vacuuming.

I guess it really depends now on how to vac it and how does it stretch without many wrinkles.

Often people achieve even heating of the plastic sheet for vacuum molding by building a simple a ply box "oven" with an open top and a few heating lamps at the bottom sides pointing in and up. Probably could substitute 2-4 heat guns, but lamps would probably give more even heating. Sometimes a frame holding heat lamps is placed above the vacuum table as well, but this is probably only needed for larger, thicker sheets.

Just curious as to why you are going this route and not vacuum bagging a fiberglass shell? All you would need is a silicone mold over your vacuum table mold then a mother mold of fiberglass to hold the shape.

Here is a mask I made a few years back. I did not vacuum it just poured this one no need for glass. But same process as described above.

^^

Thanks guys for your reply.

Basically I've seen how petg works and tried to do it myself. One thing bugs me more than anything is how to take a plastic off the plaster mold. Hence, a silicone is a better idea (more expensive in AUS).

Nice mask:)

Thanks for the compliment.

Silicone is pretty expensive. You could all ways use self vulcanizing latex way cheaper just not as durable as silicone. I do have a mold making book that shows you how to make a vacuum molding table.
