My Home Depot kite pump

Postby clif37 » Tue Oct 22, 2013 2:56 am

I put this together with parts from Home depot. It uses a $40 Roybi pump. I would say it only is cost effective if you already have some Ryobi batteries laying around. It pumps low pressure and then high pressure. I switch it manually . The gauge is from McMaster-Carr. Before everyone jumps on me for being lazy I have an old injury that really hurts when I pump but doesn't bother me much riding. Besides who wants to pump a kite on a blazing hot beach?

lazy but smart, funny how everyone thinks pumping a kite is a great workout, try taking a jog much better then pumping a kite besides kiting is way less of a workout then surfing, running, biking etc

Lazy? I love how the wannabe purists seem to think it somehow makes them more of a "true kiter" if they pump by hand. What's wrong with using technology?

To the wannabe purists. So instead of using your car/truck to get to your kite spot you walked 40 miles in bare feet from your house? Since your're not lazy...you definitely don't use modern transportation right?

Oh...that's right...you don't live in a house. You live in a wooden hut made from the trees you chopped down from a flint rock ax you pulled from the earth with your bare hands.

OP +1 on your ingenuity.

"injured or not , you're still lazy"

Well if I do something so I can ride all day instead of having to go home after the kite is inflated I seem to get a much better workout. I spent 6 months in a wheelchair on oxygen. I was really lazy then! I never even walked anywhere. Two doctors told me I would never walk again. The not being lazy was what I did to be able to walk again. I doubt you would be able to work that hard. To do something that makes it hard to kite would be ignorant since I love the sport and the ocean. Thinking that you know what someone should do is also ignorant. That is a lot harder to fix than lazy.

I tried just that stock Ryobi pump, but found it pumped a lot slower than I was willing to wait. Hand pumping was faster, so after a test drive I returned the unit. Clif, have you had a better experience?

Your obviously not pushing yourself enough then.... I ache all over and am generally f****d for a day or 2 after a decent session.

I've had this argument numerous times with my non-kiting mates, they all go to the gym 3/4/5 times a week and get pissed off when they see me with less body fat than they have when i probably get out on average once maybe twice a week and i always argue that it doesn't matter how much you go or how good the equipment is you simply cannot recreate the stresses and strains the body goes through from a kite in the gym! That and going to the gym is s***!

I'm fucking lazy... I have an electric pump, a cleaning lady, I go to the full serve gas station, l hire a kid to cut my lawn, I pay to have my car detailed.... if I could find a kid that would deflate and roll up my kite I would pay them as well. Thinking of moving to DR....
What is it to you?

I spent $500 for an on-board air compressor and tank rig in the back of my truck. Sounds like the original poster and I have are not the lazy ones. We worked hard to build a better alternative to the horrible hand pumps that come with kites.

No one ever complains when they use my air. In fact they seem to enjoy getting on the water a lot sooner and with a little more energy. Not to mention I can operate pneumatic tools and inflate tires with my compressor. What else can your hand pump do?
