nugget or subwoofer

Postby mogthedog » Sat Nov 02, 2013 9:10 am

I'm looking for a light wind small wave surfboard, I weigh 85KG and prefer to ride strapless when its small.

Any ideas which would be more suitable for a bit of light wind small wave riding?

Haven't ridden the subwoofer but I just had my first session yesterday on the new 2014 North Nugget strapless and it is super fun!! Shoots upwind, tight snappy turns, quad fins loose enough to blow out the fins on a top turn, real lively feel to the board! I was riding it in waist to chest high surf and it was holding its own! I was really impressed with the refined shape this year and it would be my choice in marginal or small waves/light wind conditions (though it was blowing 20 - 25 during my session).

Any way you could demo both boards and see which one suits your style better?

Cheers,

I've had a lot of sessions on the 2013 Subwoofer and 2014 is very similar from what I've been told by Cabrinha. It's a lighter wind board that doesn't feel big. I'm 200 lbs and ride strapless in light , medium and strong winds and the subwoofer is perfect for me in light and medium winds.

I've learned a lot about surf boards over the years and some just have too much power in the tail to do much with them except get going in light winds. Due to too much width and thickness, these boards are great for lighter winds, but harder to turn strapless due to the power (width and thickness) in the tail.

The Subwoofer may give up a little on the low end compared to some other boards, but it's tons more fun on the waves. Snappy turns and it just feels perfectly balanced the first time you step on the deck.

It's just the right width and thickness and of course rocker line to make it work really well in these conditions.

If you have a good dealer, support them. If not, let me know and I'd be more than willing to order one if you decide to go this route. Just sold my last Sub Woofer recently.

I hope this helps,

Bob

Mogthedog: I think a better comparison would be the subwoofer to North's Whip rather than the Nugget. A little more similar in shape but I think the Whip has a wider range of conditions it handles! Small to medium size surf. Btw, I surfed the Nugget all day today in chest high waves and its excitingly fast (because of quad fin setup), really fun, and super cool feel to it!

Danny...that's a great point to compare the Whip closer to the Subwoofer. Looks a lot more similar in dimensions.
