Tsunamis are caused by earthquakes, not wind and the sea there is pretty shallow, I don't see any reason for that big waves to build up

I imagine the people of the Phillipines fighting for their lives and homes as we speak would probably disagree with you!!!

Let's hope for the best and such wave won't hit.
It would destroy a lot from a lot of people I know and like a lot.

Fingers crossed!!!!

The typhoon haiyan (aka yolanda) has pressures below 900mb across a huge area.
It's causing a surge not a tsunami.
The surge may be up to 5m in a few places, and many parts of the philiipines will see 2m+ of surge.
Wind gusts are up to 260km/h.
Flood and wind damage will be severe and widespread.
This may be one of the worst storms ever recorded.
Say a prayer for those in its path.

the center passed by Boracay already by now, looks like they should get less wind now.

Anyone knows about some damage or waves already?

... very scary indeed.

If you've never been through a cyclone/typhoon its hard to really know how scary it is,,,, jump in your car, drive down the road at 160 km/hr (100 miles an hour) and put your head out the window, feeling that is a good start!!!

Our last cyclone that hit us was luckily for us a small category 1 and even that one had a storm surge but even double lucky us, we had low tide when it crossed the coast so didn't effect us at all. Mind you, another cyclone that went near us though months later spit out huge swell and our local beach lost 7m of sand dunes, totally messed it up and taken 2 years to sort of look normal again.

My friends who have been to Boracay a few times say a surge of a couple meters is really going to affect the place and a big shame, its not going to be pretty which ever way you look at it.

One thing though, the Phillipino's are hard workers so probably won't take long and it'll be back.

Good luck!

I stayed there a couple of years back, hopefully they're okay!

At least the Phillipinos were generally smart enough to heed the warnings of there officials and the weather forecasters by heading for high ground. Remember Katrina and Sandy, you silly Americans?

Still over 100 deaths though...sad. All the best and take care over there.
