Ankle strain using Mako

Love my Mako, but as I have gotten more adept at surfing the waves with it, I seem to have strained my front ankle from the strap doing surf maneuvers I do with my short board.

Since then, I have gone back to dedicating most of my riding on the surfboard.

Any other former surfers had this problem?
It seems like a strapped Mako may be too tight and locked down for slashing cut backs or off the lips...for me anyhow...

never had a prob ... just adjust your straps accordingly - plenty of options for strap placement too, or just put different straps on ...

what about those swivelling footpads?

never tried them buy might be an idea....

That's all I ride in the waves and never had a problem but we all stand a little different.

The Mako is a sweet board, but I stopped riding it because I hated the straps. It was kind of a blessing as I mainly just ride strapless now.

no problems on the king. but if I am jumping to much yes my knee start to ask for a rest. Love the mako \

Maybe loosening the straps just a bit may help! It can make a big difference

It could be that your body can't keep up with the board. The board can hold down a lot of speed and power, your ankles need to bend and take shocks. The better the riding the more you want to push the board and you push the ankles too much.

Q: Could you ride the same way with a different strapped TT and not hurt your ankle? If no, then you could be having too much fun. Sorry.

Alternately, I ride the 150, I set it up to take some strain out. I moved the straps back to give myself maybe a half inch bias toward my dominant side - less leaning back over the tail. I moved the straps and pads toward the toe side of the board - the mako holds plenty of heel side naturally so you can give a little up to dig in better toeside. I also ride without the front fin which doesn't have as much to do with comfort as sweepiness. I'm a little compromised on my weak tack but that's not where I'm playing anyway.

It's never going to give you the freedom of strapless though.
