Where to Snow Kite in the Rockies This Week? (Dec 16-20)

Postby jakemoore » Sun Dec 15, 2013 8:59 pm

Hello,

I'll be spending the week around Denver, but can pretty much hit any spot within a 12 hour drive.

Any suggestions for wind and snow Monday Dec 16 - Fri Dec 20?

Jake

Jake,
You should come down to SW Colorado. You might have to go high this week to find wind. Snow Mesa or McMillon could work Monday, Wed, Th. Tuesday looks dead.
I don't know if Dillon is frozen over yet.
Good luck!

Dillon isn't frozen yet- so that's off the list.
I was way impressed by the Bighorn, WY location- but having partners and a sled are pretty key.
otherwise- the San Juans are in (as mentioned by matt)- there is plenty of snow already.

Rabbit Ears Pass (near Steamboat) might be a possibility. Lots of snow and easy access. Have'nt been there yet this year, but might venture a trip Wednesday - looks best for any wind.

And Catsh is correct, Lake Dillon is still water, but it may freeze before Xmas this year. All the bays are frozen already with that cold snap we had. I'll keep you all posted.

Rick, in Dillon

Cheers guys! I will probably stay in South Fork a couple days to put me closer to the San Juans.

Hey, we just got back from kiting down there. Sunday on snow mesa the snow was pretty rough, some soft stuff in the gullies. Monday we tried a new spot west of snow mesa, found some real nice pow on Jarosa Mesa. Fun terrain, it should work well in most wind directions. It is a little farther in, maybe 4 miles but a little less climb than snow mesa. Lots more exploring to be done with all the mesas in that area.
I think you can 'park and ride' Rio Hondo reservoir, and maybe some other lakes and valleys near there.
Blue Mesa Reservoir has a thin snow layer on thick ice at the east end. Taylor reservoir and surrounding area has just enough snow.
Good luck finding the wind and snow. Tony

Hey Jake I hope you're finding some wind out there. Forecasting is tricky this week with the split flow around Colorado. I really hope we get some freshies tonight and tomorrow; it's starting to get crunchy out there.
Parker and I got lucky at our little local Crystal Res spot today for lunch break.
