New Zealand Kitesurfing Advice

Postby surfm » Fri Jan 10, 2014 10:29 pm

Hi there, I'm flying to New Zealand (Auckland) next week and still not sure of where to head first and what kite sizes and wetsuits to bring.

I have 10 days in total, which regions on the north island would you recommend going to most? I love both, waveriding and flatwater kiting :-)

And regarding gear, was thinking of bringing 7-9-12 (70kg) but heard that it can get very windy (+35kt) even this time of the year, so maybe the 5m as well? And what wetsuits are typically worn? is a shorty/overknee sufficient, or should i bring the 5/3mm?

thanks for your help! looking forward to some killer days in nzl!

Your unlikely to use you 5m in the next couple weeks.

12 and 9 will be most common at the moment.

Swell map predicts quite well.

Decide which part of the country to go to with this.

Generally speaking west coast has better waves east coast has flatter water.

Ruakaka is sweet.
Auckland has a beach facing any wind direction. 40 mins from one coast to the next.
Muriwai for a W waves a dumpy at muriwai and Orewa for a E

Tuaranga in the bay of plenty I'm told is good but haven';t kited there

Raglan has the magic carpet and waves.

taranaki the best place for waves

foxton wicked flatwater estuary and 20km long beach

That's just a snippet theres literally thousands of good spots.

Tauranga generally a very windless place, lived there for 2 and half years. Frustrating place for kiting. Wellington is good also for waves and lots big flat water between sets. You could still use your 5 this time of year. 40 knot forecast down here tomorrow.Think your best to stay up the top of north island as you dont have a lot of time for travelling. Have fun :jump:

nz... been in boardies or a shortie for last coupel of months - but its nz - you neeever know - 4 seasons in one day - water warm tho..)dont plan where you will be and when - huge mistake for nz - base it on what windguru says days before - raglan - always on if seems like no wind in nz and its sunny westerly flow and outgoing tide - be cautious of outgoing rip- have a plan.... other than that ^^^

cyclone ian is currently battering tonga unfortunately but could produce some sick east coast cyclone swell- the west coast always has waves except for maybe 2 days a year - be very careful on west coat if swell in very large as it often is.. dirty dirty rips going on.., yup quite literally thousands of spots to ride - njoi

check the forecast for a westerly or easterly flow. If its west theres no point heading to Tauranga. If its east or north then give it a go.
Looking forecast is looking pretty west driven for the next week.

muriwai - close to Auckland but dumpy waves
raglan - waves but lost of surfers, flat water but huge current
new Plymouth - no flat - epic waves
foxton - epic flat water, pretty average beach break waves.

all the above will be hit with sweet westerly winds

Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty is not actually that bad. Granted, the previous two years were the worst that I can remember. La Niña seemed to shift the westerlies southward and the humidity stuffed up the thermals. Westerlies are actually pretty good and sunnier than the west coast.
Most late afternoons have been kiteable this summer. Loads of white sand beaches and estuaries to explore with a tidal kick if you go to the right place.
This week should be awesome, lots of wind plus a tropical cyclone swell.

Hi,
I'm not as though as kiwi guys and i use a full 3/2 in summer. On Saturday it was quite nice and i was just on shorts on the west coast.

My suggestion are:
1) play with the tide. Outgoing tide and onshore wind means more fun :) Then the same spot with different tides can be wavy, choppy or flat
2) even with poor forecast on the west coast you can have some fun.

Around Auckland this is a good guide

http://jckitesurfandsup.co.nz/Locations ... SPOTS.html

As you can see here in Tauranga you can even kite with SW. In an amazing flat water spot.
http://assault.co.nz/location

What i found is that in Raglan, that is an amazing spot, you really need to check the tides and you can't really stay all day on the water.

Around Auckland with Sw you can for example do wave in Muriwai, then go till the south head for an amazing flat water spot. Or head shakespear with mid to low for a nice flat water spot.

Distance between East and West it's just 60km.

Another rule is: with wind from west head west or south west for stronger wind.
with wind from East NE head NE (Orewa or northen) for stronger wind.

Have a lot of fun

Dont expect any proper wave riding around Auckland, especially not at Muriwai. You can kite on and then off the wave no worries but getting the wind direction and waves to actually line up to actually surf the wave just doesn't happen much. I think taranaki is the best spot in nz for that..
