Naish Fly (15m) a decent surf kite in onshore shorebreak?

Naish Fly (15m) a decent surf kite in onshore shorebreak?

Considering a 3rd attempt at a light wind surf kite. I seem to have forgotten the first two unsatisfying attempts (an old 15m Naish Boxer and a 19m Flysurfer Speed2; both ponderous and only marginally fun), and my conclusion that if it's not blowing good I should just do something else.

I paraglide at a spot on Monterey Bay, CA, USA, where wind is often 8-16kts, directly onshore. Good sandbar formation and light/moderate wind can leave reasonably clean surf, and many times looking down while flying I've thought the kiting looked better...IF a light wind kite could beat through the shorebreak, go upwind just well enough, and handle decently in the surf.

I would be riding a high volume, light wind surfboard. Not expecting miracles from the kite, and I understand the inherent limitations of light wind kiting.

Rider: 185lbs, intermediate/advanced
Style: Surf
Weather: 8-16kts

Anybody out there have experience surfing the Naish Fly in onshore conditions?

Anybody able to compare and contrast the 2013 v. 2014 Fly?

Thanks for sharing any relevant Fly experiences.

Why not an F-One Bandit 14m?
For your windrange
& surf is more than what you might want. And goes upwind like on rails ;)

I have not yet ridden the new one, but the old one worked well. In the lightest of wind downlooping the kite works well.
For a big kite it is as good as it gets for surf IMO. I used the fish and the fly. It drifts when is just above bare minimum. As usual, make sure you keep the lines as tight as possible. I've "ridden" waves before there is much whitecaps.

Well, I'm riding 7, 8, 10 & 12 Parks. Love 'em. Want to stay w/same brand/bars.

I think the best lightwind surf kite is the Boardriding Maui Cloud (strutless kite). Super light, fastest turning kite for its size, drifts. It just does not fall out of the sky.
You can waveride with the 17m, its turning speed is somewhere between a 12-14m kite.
Works very well with the Naish Bar. I also ride Parks in the sizes below it (and have a 6m Cloud for waverriding).

Hi,
I can definitely recommend the Cloud for light wind "surfing" as well!
I have the Cloud C1 in 17 m² (and 10 m²), and the 17 is really working very well with a surfboard, just as Dirk described it.
The Cloud is so light and stable, just a dream. BTW, I´ve been out with it when in parallel two guys with Flys were riding. I had much more fun, obviously :)
It certainly doesn´t turn super fast, but for it´s size I cannot imagine anything better. And it stays in the sky even when you fully drive towards the kite in lightest winds. Then, after you made your turn and pull in the bar, it just continues to pull you softly upwind again :thumb:
However, at 16 kts the 17 might become a bit of a handful... But FUN (not just riding) from 10 kts is guaranteed!

Hi. I owned a Fly 2013. It was one of the best pump LW kite that I've ever had. If well trimmed is very stable and powerful. I used It mainly with the North Nugget 2012 and It worked amazingly. For what concerns onshore wave conditions It is almost perfect but It requires some trim adjustement like less bar pressure and grunt. Sometimes in order to improve its turning abilityes I removed the extension lines. That being said I can say that the Fly is one of the best LW kite out there.....strangely underrated :( .
Cheers

Hi. The spot is the famous Porto Pollo near La Coluccia. Great flat water spot :thumb: even if the wind (maestrale) is pretty gusty. That day the wind was very light (6/9 Knots) and blowing onshore (levante).
Cheers
